Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG + Belkin 54g router = incompatible?

i got myself the 700m from the $750-off dell deal. i was probably dumb to have opted to receive the Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG network card upgrade, as it appears to be completely incompatible with my wireless network that has been working fine on my husband's 700m (which has the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200).

the router we're both using is a belkin 54g.

besides the fact that my husband has the 2200, he's using XP home. i'm using XP pro (i formatted the drive -- he kept the dell as it arrived with the normal specifications).

i've done a ton of things, such as
* reconfiguring the router (disabling WPA-Personal keys, so that the router was insecure)
* checking for the latest router firmware updates (there are none)
* upgrading the 2915ABG driver
* uninstalling the intel software which was running on top of the XP wireless connection screen, assuming that that may have been a problem in itself (it wasn't). one thing i should note is when i did use the intel program, it tried to connect to the wireless network but consistently displayed "unable to connect to <SSID>" (where <SSID> obviously is the router name). it didn't give further information.
* release/renew/ugh

basically, i have the wireless network connection Enabled, and in the taskbar, i get the little bubble that says "One ore more wireless networks are available. To see a list of available networks, click here." once i click, i choose the SSID name (the computer does detect it) but the connection fails (no prompts, though.. i just get the little bubble again). and i try repeatedly with the same result.

that is all. i hope this post provides enough info... this is driving me up a wall :(

Anything in event viewer about this?
Is there any way to setup that SSID so you can enter the WPA passphrase and stuff?

nothing in event viewer as far as i know.

the passphrase is accepted -- just no connection is established.
