There are 2 types of Athlon users, I guess :

1) Those who need the FPU power, or those who want to support the underdog, or those who want to actually get benefit from DDRSDRAM, or those who want to overclock above 1ghz, or those who want a chip that is only a few pecent slower at worst, and 30%+ faster at best, across the wide range of programs available.

2) Those who were Intel-only users and got an Athlon for price-reasons only, but well and truly want Intel-inside again

I guess by this message you know which I am. ;) Hint : 3d-rendering is one of my hobbies.

In all serious though, this is great news for users #2. Maybe not such a good thing for AMD though, if Intel is finally taking them seriously enough to cut into their prices.

Obviously noone here thinks much in terms of buisness. You don't go and cut prices that much for no reason. Especially when Intels operating costs are so much higher then AMD. AMD has lived off lower pricing for a long time and will have no problem doing it again. And BTW most CPUs will be dropping about 20%-25%. With the market slow down this really doesn't make much sense so far. Their operaing costs are high, their sales are slowing. The only logical assumption is that they have alot of stock left over from their somewhat slow Q4 and then need to get it out.

Geesh guy, who cares why.......as long as it makes them easier to buy.......what;s the difference? I happened to be needing a second for a dual set-up and now I'll just buy two faster ones! I'm sure AMD will counter and help us out even more! To bad I already have a 1.2 T-Bird!!

Well I have a P3 750@840 and if I can get a p3 1gig I will go out an buy one if the price is right! But I hear that the P3 1gig is only an overclocked p3 705!

No, Rockogre. The P3-1ghz is a 1ghz chip.

That'd be like saying a P3-800eb is just an overclocked P3-600. Or a P3-933 is just an overclocked P3-700.

By that logic, an AMD 1ghz T-bird is just an overclocked 900mhz.

* But this probably belongs in a different thread *

Isn't Intel going to redo the P!!! soon? When is that? And what form factor will it be on? Will it still work with a Socket-370 Mobo?

Grendel, I hear the New PIII's will be a different socket :(

This is almost funny, I just upgrade my system, P3 866, and now the CPU prices are going to fall again :( Its good news... but sucky news at the same time !! Oh well, when someone wants to buy your parts you can't just say "Um, can you wait for 2-4 weeks so I can get the proc. I want in my next machine Really cheap?" Yea right, hehe !!

Surprising how the 'die hard' AMD fans out here are talking of going back to Intel again...

Are we supposed to be surprised that you are one up on everyone, C-wiz? ;)

Hey, no wonder you don't have any new cpu for sale threads this week. :)

To be honest, I am a die hard *money* fan. No loyalty to either chip manufacturer. Whoever can provide the paticular chip I think I need at the right price.

hmmmmm, Dulanic's right Intel obviously lost last quarters slaes-bad for them good for us, but their is another posibilty Intel lost about 20%+ of its market share last year they could be getting desperate. This looks to me like an ultimated, something like OK AMD you figure you can beet a monoploly lets see how much you can really take

I have brand loyalty, Go AMD! But untill monday im not going to make a judgement for this quarter
