Intel Prescott Already Has 64-bit Extensions

I found this over at Xbit 🙂 looks like Intel may have a Counter-attack on the blow AMD64 had on them 🙂 orrr maybe it was more like a slap from a girl either way intel didnt run off and cry to mummy !!! 😉

64bits won't be enabled. Like Hyperthreading was in the earlier P4s but never enabled. For testing use only and to be officially released with Yamhill in 2005. Of course, the Intel people are debating wether to release the 64bit cpu next year so we'll never know. I personally think the 64-bit cpu will greatly increase the cpu price and will actually generate worse revenue than staying with 32bit for another year. After all, who has $1000 for a cpu?

This is going to piss everyone off if true. Intel is the big swinging (you know what) in the CPU market, but if Intel does indeed have their own proprietary 64-bit extensions, and they take awhile to get them out the gate, it could seriously bite them in the @$$.

Honestly though, it's all speculation at this point. Everything about mainstream 64-bit computing is up for grabs and there's no point in taking a view or "side" right now because there's nothing to back up. Until 64-bit actually becomes widely used this is all just for show...

I'll believe it when I see it, especially since most Intel higher ups claim there is no need for a 64bit desktop computer and they don't see any market for it.

 

Everyone tries to take bites out of Intel. They are so big, they are hard to miss. Intel dwarfs AMD in pure size and diversification. The ONLY area that AMD can compete with intel is the CPU arena. AMD does nothing else. No chipsets, no networking, no motherboards, no wireless, and a million other things that intel makes. NADA. AMD makes great processors, but to think that they can EVER hurt intel enough finiancially is not very credible. Intel could even stop making processors. Not a wise decision, but they probably could still survive on there other products and still dwarf AMD.

I am an Intel user. I have used AMD on occasion. No matter what AMD comes out with, no matter what, Never dismiss Intel.

AMD is the underdog. So was Linux, and Netscape, and I think that is what makes people so fond of them. The people who like to take the "other" path.
To be not usual. Fine. It's your life, do what you want with it. Once in a while I will dabble in something else, but thats all it is, a dabble.

I just traded parts with a friend. I gave him 3 sticks of 256 Registered ECC SDRAM in exchange for an Athlon XP 1800 and Nforce2 Mobo. You know, dabble?
I thought it would be fun to play around with it. It doesn't have 64bit extensions though. I may have made a poor decision. 😉

You lose all credibility with that statement. You might want to check out what else AMD does, for example flash memory.
