The only machine I have I think this CPU would work with has it's original CPU soldered in. I'm going to assume it's similar for a lot of other notebooks based around this CPU.

I believe they used a socket 478 similar to the Pentium M because it was physically smaller. Note that the Intel site states it runs on a 133MHz FSB, not the 400/533MHz of a Pentium M. This CPU will not work in any desktop board.

Yea, uh-huh... next time you'll read it all the way through before trying to pick a fight :D

Trust me, if it was a 1.13ghz PentiumM (if one existed to begin with), I would have snapped one up too.

Zap is also correct, as I don't believe there was a single desktop motherboard made that supported the 478-pin Pentium 3. Do note, however, that a LOT of last generation Pentium 3 notebooks used this socket, including a lot of Dell's. If you're in doubt and you have a Pentium 3 notebook, simply download CPU-z and it should let you know what socket you're using.

Also, depends on the motherboard. Some mobos only support up to a certain clock speed.

Yep. This chip is physically smaller than a CompactFlash card.

FINALLLY, someone pointed out the obvious! Moreso, why would you want to use a P3 in a P4 board????

Why would they have 2 different versions of a socket type? (478)

That's pretty silly. ;)

I think people were thinking it was a Pentium M - somehow their eyes were glazing past the "III" part. The Pentium M chips (perhaps excepting the ULV models) can work in certain Asus motherboards with an adaptor, giving a P4 platform Athlon 64-like performance.

Yup, that's to adapt the {b]Pentium M/Celeron M[/b] to certain Asus motherboards. However, the CPU listed by the OP is a Pentium III M. Even if it used the same physical socket (I'm not sure on this) the electrical characteristics would be different (I'm sure on this).

Bad geeks, BAD!!!

http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20050525/

Summary:
With a simple adapter, Intel's Pentium M processor can be used on veteran mainboards based on the i865 and i875 chipsets.
Would you believe that this unorthodox combination proves to be so fast that it beats even the Athlon 64 FX and the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition?!

And if I remember right, I thought there were mods that let you skip the adapter on some motherboards too... hmm

bad bearxor... bad...

Notice the highlighted part, did no one else catch that? Pretty funny.

Hey, I'm a neophyte when it comes to upgrading laptops, and only marginally experienced in upgrading desktops.

Here's an easy question. I have an oooold Compaq Armada 1592dmt. Can this system use this PIII cpu? Or is it just too old (as I suspect).

Thanks for a slightly off-topic question.

There was a discussion about this awhile ago, but I can't find it in the archives. Anyhoo...
Processor Compatibility Issues

The new Intel® Pentium® 4 processor uses a 478-pin package while the mobile Pentium III processor in the FC-PGA package uses a 478-pin package. While physically, you can insert a Pentium 4 processor into a mobile Pentium III processor-M laptop or a mobile Intel Celeron® processor notebook and you can insert a mobile Pentium III processor-M or a mobile Intel Celeron processor based on .13 micron process technology into a desktop Pentium 4 processor system, the two type of processors are not electrically compatible and it will damage the processors and/or the system if you do. In addition, this can void your warranty for your laptop and processor.
The PIII-M processor is a PIII architecture used with Intel 815M and 830M mobile chipsets, NOT P4 architecture.

I have T21 too, why don't u try it and let me know. :) But seriously, T21 runs at 100 FSB and this runs at 133, so I don't think it will work.

First of read this regarding the p4/p3 thing directly from intel.

http://support.intel.com/support/processors/mobile/pentiumiii/sb/CS-007528.htm

then

I have one of these too...IBM also says it wont take pc133 memory but guess what the 512 of pc133 i got in mine works fine. Ibm says the fastes processr this thing will take is a 900. However for 20.00 im in and ill try it. and if not it goes on ebay for 40.00
lol

EDIT: NM I found this....AWESOME

And then theres this to actully help you find the processor

it looks like thes are our winners here

http://processorfinder.intel.com/script...5&PkgType=ALL&SysBusSpd=ALL&CorSpd=ALL

which you can grab here

this model number too

SL53S
SL5TF
SL58S

and I think these too

As noted in the Google Groups thread...

"T20/21/22 in that they MAX out with BGA2 1GHz PIIIs and
they're all built on the same Intel 440BX chipset."

"The T23 is built on the Intel 830MP chipset and has the Micro-FCPGA
processor. The fastest Micro-FCPGA PIIIM is the 1.2GHz"

The T20/21/22 are based on mobile Intel 440BX chipset and are Socket 370. T23 is based on Intel 830MP and is Socket 478.

This processor won't work in T20 ~ T22, but will work in T23.

P3 run on FSB 100 MHZ, no way this will run on a 400MHZ base FSB boards ...

NO NO to Mobile P3 on a P4 board
