Since most of you will hardly have the opportunity to get a Pentium 4 CPU in the nearest future, we decided to show you what the stuff you will buy for that crazy money looks like. Here is a "sacred" box with all the content:

The package includes a large cooler and two PC800 64MB RIMM modules by Samsung (which actually are the most expensive part of the package), which is now available for something close to $1300.

I haven't been to work in a while, but since we are Pro-Intel, I am betting we have a stockpile of em.

Hmm, why would Intel have RAM to go with it? Usually they bundle it with the boards.

definitely not. if you do, you might as well burn your money since the price is skyhigh since it just got released. wait a little while and the price would be much more reasonable.

The problen is that even at 1.5ghz, the P-IV is just barely a match for the newest 1.2ghz Athalon (wiyh DDR SDRAM support) in identically equipt boxes. When the P-IV will shine is when the clock speeds are brought up to anything near what the P-III's run at. Then we'll be buying the 3-3.2ghz. P-IV's that will eat everyone's lunch! Until then, a high line Athalon or P-III is still the way to go.

Well, as opposed to what everyone thought, the P4 is actually a good overclocker. I forget who did it but someone took a 1.5 or 1.4 and overclocked it to 1.73+. Then it really started to shine. The reason why Intel packed 2 sticks of ram in there was to compensate for the high prices of the ram and make more people want to get it.

I cant believe this!!!

Seemingly rational people are already hypnotized by Intel's marketing rubbish! Don't you get it? It's SLOWER than the P3! SLOWER! say it a few times and maybe it'll sink in. It's not something to get excited about. It's something to joke about around the copy machine.

I'm not defending intel or the pIV, but clock for clock it is slower.

The reason they include 2 64MB Rimm's is because the i850 is a dual-channel rdram mb(ram must be upgraded/installed in pairs).

Saying the P3 is faster than the P4 is very narrow thinking. Although true, you have to see the potential of the P4. The P4 can reach 2ghz+ while the P3 will only get as high as 1.26 I believe next year. Then, the P3 is dropped and the P4 2ghz+ cpus come out and start whopping some butt. I would love to get a 2ghz P4 and overclock that sucker.

Ok so we've established that at the moment the P4 is almost always slower than a P3.

So in 6mnths time when the clock speeds are increased it'll be about as fast as the P3 is now (and by then the P3 and athlon will be faster and much much cheaper).

So then you wait another 6 mnths for the new software instructions to be implemented in some programs and you have a processor that is a lot faster than the older generaltion CPU's in select programs and about the same as a year old CPU in other apps.

So in 12 months time its kinda a good CPU. So you'd be really silly to buy one now right? cause it's slow now...RIGHT? So you'd only want to consider buying the stupid thing in about 2 years if there isn't something better from AMD or Cyrix...RIGHT???

Say what! $1300 for CPU and 128 of RIMM. Just how much does the motherboard for this baby gonna cost? I guess I'll get an AMD on my next upgrade. I'm still waiting for the dual AMD board.

You underestimate a world leader in chip manufacturing.
I understand that some products suck.
But Dont you think they would at least improve over previous designs at least marginally? I havnt really seen Nvidia release a new video card that was actually slower then the last one.
People like to look down on companies in the spotlight.
Calling their multi billion dollar projects usless and pointless.
Im pro Intel AND AMD, they are both great chipmakers. The only chip alternative you have in existance pretty much.
But lets take the people on this BBS and get them in a meeting with the engineers from Intel. And see who has more to say =D.
They get paid lots to do their work, and Intel probably didnt stay anywhere near the top if they produced $hit product, like I see everyone claming they do when a new product is released.
Find me someone or a group of people that can do it better. ;)
Then start talking smack ;)
