Click modems and they have an intel pci hardware modem for $15 with free shipping. I took a chance with them since I've never heard of them and used paypal to pay. I picked up 5 for $12.25 each which is hot with the free shipping and my friends have been burning out modems like crazy with lightning storms, etc. YMMV on this I suppose.

I have one of these modems, very good modem. I just got one recently to replace one that was fried by lightning.

Nice find. I used this modem in a system I built and it was great. Connected at 115,000 a few times.

As for the Broadband thing, sure that would be nice if I and many others had it available. Until then, keep the cheap modem deals coming.

No reseller ratings........ but if they were out to scam you, why have items out of stock?

I can vouch for these guys, i've ordered from them twice, once from ebay and once from their website (which is a couple of bucks cheaper...so use it)

Got delivery within 6 days from CA. These are the green box intel hardware modems that will work any machine with a pci slot :)

Anyway, it's reading your max connection. Either poor drivers, or it never will report properly because software like Walmart On-line cant get it right in the "connected" screen. Find the control command set for the chipset or add the right command switch, (try ATW3 ) to make it read connection speed. Don't think there are many true hardware modems around today, but it really doesn't matter with 1gig + cpu's in today's computers. This is a good replacement modem for the price either way.
EDIT: IF you are willing to experiment, try AT+MS=V90,1,0,33600,56000 in the "additional commands" box for the modem, the last two commands set min and max rx speed and might make it report true connection speed. I found the info here:

does that indicate that its a software modem and not a hardware modem?

I've got one last time this came up. Vendor is good, shipped right away with timely confimations. Modem is a hermaphrodite. Shows up with a HAM control panel after installation (HAM = Hardware Assisted Modem, I assume?). Still it works well for what it is. A cheap PCI modem.

see Here the chipset (numbers on the chip on the modem) will tell the story, hardware or software or a little of both.

Yeah, I know that number isn't an accurate representation of connection speeds, but it was the fastest modem that I had used from the location that I was dialing from out of 3 or 4 modems. The throughput was pretty good. Nonetheless, it connected at high speeds and was as good or better than others that I have used, including a $90 Zoom modem until it ultimately met its demise from a lightning strike.

One thing to remember is that certain modems will work better with different ISPs depending on what equipment they have. My experience with this modem could be unique to me, but hey for $15.00 you can't go wrong. I have never had a modem that didn't work at least with ok results, so I say give it a try. Assuming that this place is reputable, then I see no reason not to take advantage of this. The price certainly is nice.

My 2 cents...again.

Looks just like the one I received from geeks this week for $10.95 (before coupon).

Doubt it is the same, geeks says Intel chipset, these Ambient/Cirrus/Intel modems have Texas Instrument chips I believe. But yes, any modem under $15 is worth trying. The "holy grail" is a PCI hardware modem $15 or less. The original poster said hardware modem because the web site called it that, it could be, it's good find either way.

This modem uses MD536x chipset. It's a HaM (Host Accelerated Modem). Your system's CPU
is still used for signal processing. So it's not a hardware modem.

From my experience w/ this modem, I can usually connect at 50.6Kbps to 52.0Kbps
compare to 46Kbps w/ cheap PCtel-chip modems.

FYI, you can get better/newer version of this modem w/ ITU v.92 at compgeeks for
$10.95 + s&h.

Mine went v.92 with a new download from some site in taiwan (i found with a google search). (in XP)
