Intel P4 506 vs. AMD Sempron 3000+

I'm looking at bying this pc, all the parts look alright, I'm only a bit worried about the CPU.

It's a P4 506, 2.66 GHz, 1MB cache, 566 MHz FSB, socket 775.
Is this some kind of OEM CPU, as I can't find it for sale separately (at least not in Sweden)?

The system actually comes very cheap, but I might be possible to match it building myself, in that case I was thinking about an AMD Sempron 3000+.

My question is, which CPU would perform better?

Performance between those CPUs will be close enough not to be noticed. They'll switch places depending on what kind of work you load them with.

With that said, the Sempron is going to be considerably cooler. When I say considerably cooler, I mean that it's likely to output less than half as much heat as the P4. That's definately worth taking into account.

BTW, you would be right in saying that the P4 in question is an OEM model.

I might also mention that it might be worth considering getting a Sempron 2800+ and a good (and cheap) overclocking board like the ASUS K8N. My brother has those part and overclocking was as simple as raising the HTT bus to 275MHz through BIOS. It makes the CPU run at 2.2GHz (on stock volts) and performance is on par with an Athlon64 3000+. :)

I would go with the sempron, it's going to be faster at basicly everything, and put out a lot less heat. That model of P4 doesn't have hyperthreading which eliminates any of it's possible advantage depending on what you are doing, but I would go with the sempron.

Yeah, because that's a crippled P4 ( lots of OEMs sell them, since people will buy anything called a P4  ), I'd have to recommend thr Sempr0n.

For all the reasons above, sempron, faster and cooler. (and maybe even cheaper)

can?t recommend any Intel chip over its AMD Equivalent other than a P-M Chip.

Ohh, I had forgotten about its lack of HT! In that case, there's absolutely no reason to get the P4.

WTF is that thing. Its basically a Celeron D 3x0 (what ever the 2.66 variety is) with all the cache. Its going to get raped.

sempron definitely. even if you consider getting an intel, it should be a core duo/solo (pentium M) or p4 w/ HT. but still, amd all the way no matter what (unless you're getting a notebook).
