I'm trying to help out a friend who has a M6TWG BioStar motherboard. His processor broke and I'm getting him a new Intel P3... The problem is that I never mess with Intel (AMD fan :) ) and I found that there are many different versions of p3.

I'm looking for a 500 Pentium 3 that would work with my motherboard... any help would be very appreciated. If you could help with a specific type, I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks.

Here's the info on the mobo if it helps any... I could really use the help.

Processor
* Intel Celeron & Pentium II, III Processor, up to 550 MHz
* Provides Socket 370 & Slot 1
Note: Version 1.2 support up to 700E MHz Flip Chip.
Chipset
* Intel 810L/810/810DC100

*Note: I have the Version 1.1 Mobo.

-What's the difference between a 500,500E, and a 500EB Pentium 3? Thanks again.

Check if it is revision 1.2 or later of the motherboard, if it is then it can support a P3 500E in FCPGA or Slot 1, it can also go up to a P3 700E.
If it's earlier then revision 1.2, then it cannot support the new Coppermine core and you'll have to use the older slower and more pricey Katmai P3 which comes in only Slot1, it'd be the generic P3 500MHz. In such a case the maxmimum the board can support is the P3 550MHz.

All processors above 600MHz are Coppermine core, as well as some between 500-600MHz. Katmai was made at 450,500,550, and 600MHz.

E denotes Coppermine core, 256K L2 cache.
B denotes processor runs on a 133MHz FSB.

If your board is revision 1.2 or newer then definitely take advantage of it's ability t take a Coppermine, as the Coppermine P3 is much much faster then the older Katmai P3 and also a fair bit cheaper, and far easier to find nowadays. Not to mention being way more overclockable.

500E is the older Katmai P3, it comes only in Slot 1 and has 512K L2 cache. It's made on a .25u process technology, and tends not to scale above 600MHz in clock speed very well. it's significantly slower then the newer Coppermine.

The P3 500E is a Coppermine core on the 100MHz FSB, with 256K L2 cache, it's available in both Slot1 and FCPGA Socket370, built on a .18u technology, and is very overclockable at 500MHz.

The P3 500EB is the same expect it natively runs on a 133MHz FSB.

As your using revision 1.1 of the motherboard then it seems it unfortunately cannot run the newer Coppermine core processors judging by the information available on the website.

Since of the cost of the older P3 that you said I think I will go with a celeron. Can I order any celeron and it will work? I'm looking at an 800 FCPGA Celeron. Will that be compatible with my mobo?

Thanks.

If you can run a coppermine u can't run any of the newer celimines (celeron 2's) since the celemines run at the same core voltage as the Coppermines (1.65, 1.7 depending on the stepping). Looks like ur stuck w/ the original Celeron or Katmais that run at a core voltage of 2.0 volts. however, if you get a slocket w/ voltage adjustment, i think u can run coppermines, celeron 2's, etc on your motherboard, but u might want to confirm with someone else since i'm not sure.

Since your revision is too low.........you might be able to run FCPGA coppermines using an adapter to lower the voltages closer to spec....
Older Asus p2b's need to do it this way.
