I am wondering if the mobos w/ Intel chipsets (i845E & i845G) are really worth $60 more than the sis 645Dx based mobos. I currently have a sis645 mobo and i love it. The only problem is the williamette processor running at 120mhz fsb, not being able to use all the bandwith of my samsung mem pc2700 overclocked to pc3200. Performance wise, i see that Intel chipsets outperform the sis clock for clock, but not that much. Also, the sis chipsets have memory bandwith to there advantage, as it could support pc3200 to push them above intel. I am considering to buy a northwood processor soon, but instead of upgrading my current setup, i could buy a new mobo to build a new system. So what is your take on the p4 ddr chipsets from both companies?

I forgot to mention that I'm already aware of such things that intel has over Sis, such as ich4 with ata133 and usb 2.0. But usb 2.0 is as easy as a upgrade card and as for ata133, it is useless as the future is serial ata.

I'd love to get a bunch of input on this one, as I'm in you're exact same position! The ASUS P4S-533 looks like a great mobo. If I build an AMD system, I'll save about $100 but all my systems (3) run Intel procs and are like rocks. we need some serious bumpage here!:D

$60 more??? Where are you shopping? You can get a nice Epox 845D/E/G board for ~ $100 @ Mwave. 645DX is only $40?

You have a 1.6 Willie @ 1920?. Hmm, Thats a tough one. With that setup, the best you could do DDR wise would be DDR320 using a 3:4 ratio on an 845 setup. You already know a 1.6A would be a huge improvement. You would see more gain with a new CPU Vs new mobo. BTW, I run PC3200 NOW on a 1.6A 845D setup. See rigs for details.

Judgmentday1, you say that intel chipsets will always be better performance wise, and i agree. But how about value wise and all those other things. I was comparing a sis645dx mobo to the epox 4g4a+, which i think is $130 on pricewatch. I know a northwood would be a good upgrade for my system, but looking at how cheap a sis645dx mobo is, i would look into a new system, because my gf3 won't be able to take advantage of the woodie. When i do get the northwood, i geuss i would be deciding on which mobo to get, sis or intel? oldfart, how did u get your mobo to run pc3200? Did u have to get that northwood to high fsb (ie. 150) in order to get your memory clock to 400?

While SiS has made GREAT strides in regards to performance, stability, and overclockability, Intel-chipset is the only choice for an an Intel processor.

I geuss epox is number 1 in the intel 845 series, am i rite? I geuss what it boils down to is whether or not they give higher memory ratio settings.

Yes. Specs are in my system rig thingy below.
epox 4g4a+, which i think is $130 on pricewatch
4G4A can be had for $93. 4G4A + has RAID for ~ $116 4BEAR 845E with RAID for $108 all @ Mwave. You dont need to spend a pile of cash for a nice 845 board.
my gf3 won't be able to take advantage of the woodie
Why not? GF3 is still a very good card.

I discovered that my gf3 is maxxed out as it is. 3dmark 2k1 score stuck around 8000 to 8500. A gf4 (non-mx) on a woodie would just kick a$$. The score would go up to around 11000 to 12000. Someone told me that the northwood upgrade in this system (even running at 150fsb) would only get me about a 500 pt increase.

I agree with this...........My daughter's vid card (GF2 Pro) recently croaked and I replaced it with a GF4 TI4200. This is with a PIII 1.0GHZ on an ASUS CUSSL2-c. I essentially my 3-D mark score to @ 7000. At least in that system the vid card was more of a bottleneck than the proc..............BTW I'm still running an overclocked BX chipset :(.:D.
