Hi,

I gotta upgrade the server at work, and have a 4000 to 5000 dollar budget. I was originally going to go with a prebuilt Dell server, but chose to go a different route.

Can anyone give me a good reason not to buy a gaming rig, (you get a hell of a system for $3,500 (Dual cores and dual 7800's!)

The existing server is a p3 1ghz (dual processor, but that didn't seem to help adding the second) And it's doing the job alright, but kinda slow and getting old.
I'm going to leave it up for the email, I run exchange server 2000 and there are only 12 people accessing it. It's also running our accounting system and estimating system. That's it. And due to the nature of the licensing of those two programs only 4 people simoultaneously use either program, and onlyh the accounting is actually a clients/server app. The other is just data that shared across the org. It'll never serve more than 20 ( more like 14 tops) client machines.

I got approval for the 4800 dollar Dell, but I just absolutely have to have the 7800's SLI's for my gaming rig at home. So, I'm thinking about a gaming rig, from isorm.com that's prebuilt with the 2 x 7800 SLI, and buy an extra MB (when the ASUS AN8 32SLI 939 is released next thursday.) and a new AMD X2 4400 or 4800, and take the 2 7800's home with the new processor/mb and breath a new life into my games.

OK, with all that said, my current gaming rigs are both P4's one is a 3.4 HT the other a P4 3.8 LGA775 . They both have radeon's in them, 9800aiwpro and x300 respectively. and they both have SB Audigy's. One is even an audigy2z.

So, I've been an Intel/ATI guy for years. Yet here I sit, contemplating a AN832SLI with anywhere from a AMD X2 4400 to a FX57, with 2 F'N NVIDIA Cards!!!

2 questions:
Do you think the server2003 will even work on a rig like this one or that one ?
Has anyone had any dealings with isorm.com?

And finally, should I go with AMD or INTEL (ducking for cover)
Thanks for any insight!

So you're going to buy a computer with your company's money and then use the parts in your computer at home? If this is not the case, check into the new Opteron they just released dual core and more cache, and extremely low priced. You also may want to try http://monarchcomputer.com I really like them for building servers.

I must be mis-understanding what you're actually thinking of doing.. - correct me if I'm wrong (please) but are you actually, seriously considering only using a portion of the company's money to buy a server and the "gravy" to buy 2x7800s, a new mainboard and a new cpu? Are you serious?? first off you won't have nearly enough $$ when your done buying your toys for anything but a low-end Dell, second off, if you're really an admin (I seriously doubt it) why do you need to steal? speaking for myself I get paid pretty well for what I do. Certainly well enough not to embezzle from the hand that feeds me.

Is there something in the water around here? yesterday I saw a few threads from people admitting to stealing software wanting to know how to get around the licensing issue. Today we have somebody admitting to wanting to steal from the company he works at to build himself a new gaming rig while they are left holding the bill.

Is it somethign in the water or are people really this stupid?

Get a dual core opterons for your company's server, use the 2xx or 8xx seires cores.

No, don't get 7800GTX sli for a server. No, don't think about stealing from company funds to fund personal gaming "server"

Seriously, some guys these days don't seem to have ethics...

uh wow I don't want to sound naive or anything but has anyone considered the possibility that he isn't stealing from his company? I mean the guy "ducks for cover" over an impending Intel vs. AMD flamewar and he doesn't bat an eyelash over embezzlement? I think what he means is he will be rewarded for saving the company money by buying a cheaper server and then use his own funds and x-mas bonus to buy 2 7800 SLI. Do I have that right OP?

He makes note of the computer he is debating and 7800s in the same sentence. It sounds to me like he is going to be purchasing a server with two 7800s and take them home and purchasing the MB and Processor with his own cash.

Two 7800s is about 1000 dollars worth of stealing right there.

The amount of work you are describing, a dual P3 at 1Ghz should have no problem doing, processing wise, unless I'm not getting the big picture. You might want to look into what other possible bottlenecks are there before you start to blindly upgrade and take advice from people who have no idea what your problem is.

They probably are lacking in good role models. I personally have an overdeveloped sense of ethics (I actually called Toytota Financial this morning to let them know that they deposited $14k of someone else's money into my account by mistake, so my ePay was showing I didn't have another car payment due until 2009) so it actually pains me to do dishonest crap like this. I can, however, understand where some lower-level employees see CEO perks and stock options that verge on embezzlement while gutting pension plans and benefits, so they decide that they want a little piece for themselves. Of course this mindset just drags everyone down in the end, but looking out for number one not matter who gets screwed over is just the American Way these days, it seems. Just look at popular shows like Survivor and the Apprentice, and you'll see how Darwinian we have become.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all convictions, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Cliche, but it sounds about right. Hopefully, one day we'll see that looking out for only yourself is the undoing of society, and that we have to have each other's backs if we are ever going to succeed over the long term, but I think we are going to go throught some seriously dark times as a nation before we see the light. But I digress.

I personally think the extraneous Ford logo on the hood really pulls the car together.

In an Icy Hot Stuntaz kind of way.

Gotta love the fact even he admits that the engine power in his car is pretty much wasted because the crappy tranny can't get the power to the tires without self-destructing in the process. That's why you don't take a fugly family sedan and make a sports car out of it:

An 8 psi supercharger is possibly in this car's near future. I'm not sure if I'll do it before, or after the dreaded and looming transmission failure.

But I digress. Again.

(In the interests of disclosure, yes, I do own a Corolla S. But only because I wanted a nice options package without having to suffer through the fugly faux-wood that comes with the LE models. The white meters on the dash also look a lot nicer than the display on the LE. But never in a million years will you see me try to rice out my economy sedan).
