Intel optimized Firefox for mac, link and info

Well, after getting bored of performance issues with the official firefox release, I've found this. It works faster and what's great is that it taps the same library with your previous firefox install, which means they'll have the same extensions, bookmarks and what not.

Yea, I tried that, it is faster yes, but its still Firefox which I really can't stand on OS X. I just wish the PithHelmet team would get Safari 3.0.3 compatibility going (AdBlocker for Safari)

Of course those are all opinions, and I think nothing less of those poor fools running Firefox on OS X 🙂
 
I can't stand safari. I'm accustomed to ctrl/command/shift+enter for websites... just that little bit irks the hell out of me. Safari 3 may change that, but I'm still left w/ the issue of cross compatibility at work and bookmark synchronization. That and of course adblock and misc various extensions that firefox has. oh, and gmail/gtalk.. heh.

I'll give it that it's speedy though. We'll see how 3.0 turns out.. the windows beta/alpha made me laugh.

Actually, the only other thing I hate that I have yet to understand.. why I can't tab through checkboxes in OS X.. or to drop down lists. especially in my web browser. I HATE that.

I don't get how Firefox for Mac doesn't look like OS X already?? It's the same grey as all my other programs.. Adium, Photoshop, and even iTunes. If you're talking about the ugly brushed metal, though, well I'll have to argue that that looks 1000x *worse* 🙂

RE: Intel optimized FF.. I've used it for several months now. It does seem to run a lot better, although it was a pain to have to change the branding back to "Firefox". I mentioned "Bon Echo" in another thread before and no one seemed to care. But I have a magical way of getting people to not reply to my posts.

Firefox aKa BonEcho + Smart Bookmarks Bar + Download Statusbar + Few of my own userChrome.css tweaks > Anything Safari can accomplish aesthetically/functionally. I don't care if it might perform slightly worse than Safari... It'd be a cold day in hell before I use Safari on a daily basis. 🙂

I don't think theStu was basing it on looks. It was more on integration with the OS itself.. like using it's built in spell checker, auto mounting images (altho, I actually HATE this from safari)... dunno what else, but he posted about it in another thread somewhere too.

For that, you go into the Keyboard and Mouse preferences of OS X, and under Keyboard shortcuts, there is a thing at the bottom about tabbing. Honestly, in my opinion, there is a world of difference between Safari 2 and 3. I used to use firefox on my mac until Safari 3 came out, then i switched.

I dislike how it completely fails to work with the OS. It is one thing on Windows, since IMO, so little integrates with each other outside of the standard suites (all the Office apps work together, all the Adobe apps work together, but not necessarily the Office and Adobe apps working together). In OS X, firefox completely ignores the built in password system, and instead uses its own. It ignores the built in dictionary and uses its own. It all just looks wrong, especially on Leopard, the buttons, the text fields, the fonts even... they just look wrong. Intel optimized firefox is nice, but isn't it made by someone completely different? If so, then I take that as just another example of how Mozilla doesn't give two sh!ts about OS X, otherwise they would have taken the time to recompile it UB (apparently, if one uses XCode to make their apps, when it comes time to compile, you can choose PPC, Intel, or Both). Camino is a step in the right direction, but it apparently doesn't work well with all the firefox extensions (not that I use any anyway) or at least that's how it was last time I tried it.

I don't know. Safari works just fine for me, and anytime I have to use Firefox, I want to be done with it as soon as possible.
 
I'm going with Stu on this one. FF for the Mac just doesn't FEEL right. I use Safari 3 now, and it does do tab drop down boxes corrctly.

Camino looks better but I don't like to install a lot of crap on my machines. I still use only IE on Windows and only Safari on OS X. Works for me 🙂.

well damn, how'd I miss that setting.. ha. Thanks.

I'm afraid of installing safari 3 at this point. Although, is it suppose to be part of leopard? I could actually live w/o adblock, it's just the bookmark synchro I want to see. I have not seen a web based bookmarking system that satisfies me.
 
Safari 3 is built into Leopard, however the settings are a little different that the Tiger version (though the 3.0.3 update may have matched them up). Personally, I use the Personalized Google Homepage since that gives me some RSS feeds, bookmarks, gmail, weather, movie times... handy things IMO. So anytime I am on any browser, I log into that and I am covered in that regard.

I can't stand google's bookmarking system. Unless they've changed it recently. I don't undersand delicious or whatever it is either.. it's a terrible system to navigate.
 
Can the Mac version of Firefox use all of the Windows Firefox plugins like downloadthemall, adblock, etc.?
 
yep, i have them all installed on my FF in OSX.

I dislike how unstable FF can be at times though, i've had it crash a few times a day before.

The only real reason I use it all the time is for the Google Sync - Makes using multiple computers a breeze - Does Safari have anything like that?
 
I use and like FF on the Mac... It runs perfectly fine on my MBP. I've been using it for years on the PC, and it's what I'm used to.
 
I was looking at some of the info on FireFox 3, they apparently are making a good deal of progress toward making it mesh better with the look of the OS. Hopefully that means that they will take steps to also mesh it better with the OS in terms of everything else. If they do that, then I may switch. I am generally pretty disloyal in things like this, I use what i think is best, and for me, Safari is best, but FF3 may be better.
