Intel LGA 115x socket users, what Core i7 or Core i5 CPU do you use for your primary home desktop?

SIDE NOTES:

I didn't include a choice for Broadwell ....Core i7 5775C and Core i5 5675C were very rare....but if you use either one of those CPUs please include a response in the thread so I can keep an accurate tally.

I also didn't include poll options for Lynnfield, but if you use one of those CPUs please include a response in the thread.

P.S. I originally wanted to include Core i3 (and other CPUs) but these were omitted because I quickly ran out of poll options. (10 options is unfortunately the maximum the forum software will allow).

I'd say the 4790K would be my primary, with the 6600K and 4690K trailing a bit further behind.

There's also a 4670K and 3570K in the mix too but I don't use those systems too often.

Replaced my i5 3570K with a 3770 recently - total cost of the upgrade was about $25.

Did you see much boost from this? I'm in the same sort of boat but it seems like kind of a hassle and I'm not sure I should invest more than I already have in this old platform.

i7 860 in da house. Optiplex 980. Runs everything I need it to. My only complaint is the small x16 slot and proprietary power supply connection.

I ran my i5 at stock, so going from, say, a 4.5ghz i5 to a locked i7 (maybe OC'd 400mhz to 4.1ghz 4 core turbo / 4.3ghz single core) might have shown a smaller, or no improvement. I noticed improvements in general system responsiveness. I'm not a heavy user - I don't do heavy rendering or encoding, I'll often play a game with music playing in the background and a web browser running, and it appears to make a difference with these uses, but for me it was a worthwhile upgrade.

I did similar & went from i5-2400 to a Xeon E3 1280v2 (similar to 3770) and am well pleased with the upgrade. It's holding me over fine, until I find something new that peaks my interest. No rush.. ;)

I selected Ivybridge Core I7 (closest to the Xeon).

Current main is a 4790K that's going to get turned into an AMD 2700 when they arrive. I don't play hardcore games or do anything intensive with it, so it's ok. *

Second computer up until a few months ago was a Core i5 750 that I used for my backups and to watch Blu rays while I worked. It got too long in the tooth, so I replaced it with a Ryzen 1200. $250 spent for a solid upgrade.

I also have a Mac Mini 2014 and a Dell XPS 9560.

*My main PC is jealous of the PCIE M2 in my Dell XPS. Also, the 4790K is about to die, so a good time to upgrade.

I've never heard of a modern CPU dying - what's going on with it?

I bought into Z370 ond 8700K on impulse, it's pretty nice, fastest desktop I've ever had by a fair margin, though I don't even bother to really OC it now except for all-core Turbo. It's undervolted a bit, in fact, because it runs flat out 24/7 doing DC.

Have an i5 2320. Plenty fast for me. I game a lot less than I used to, and mainly older games, so don't see any need to upgrade.

I'm not overclocked either, no vt-d on k chips from that generation and I'm using that feature plus I kind of lost interest in overclocking anyway.

It looks like you can get thei7-3770 for ~120$ on ebay which isn't terrible but I think I'm just going to save my pennies on that one and go straight to an 8 core in the future. I already spent way to much money on old refurb motherboards, its time for even me to move on I think. :p

Fun bit, I picked up my current motherboard salvage on eBay, the socket had been damaged and several pins and the board would not post. I cut up some fine copper wire and took some individual strands, bent them and stuck them into the socket holes, and have a working Z77 board for the cost of shopping.
