Intel Launches AppStore

Had to do something to counter the ever-increasing popularity of Apple's AppStore, I suppose. The infrastructure is already there (x86) but obviously desktops/workstations are not its target. Netbooks or other portables are where it's at, and we'll see how it works out.

gah..

i refuse to use apple products only on the basis that i cant tollerate itunes.

would be nice if we saw alternatives to itunes.

I'm not a fan of iTunes, either, but I happened to receive an iPhone 4 and iPad for free from one of my suppliers ("promotion", they say) and began my journey into the dark side.. and I have to say I am impressed so far. I still don't like much of their closed nature of Apple products but iOS impressed me, to be frank. Especially v. Windows Mobile.

While I haven't tried yet but there are ways to break into the iOS (jailbreak, I hear) so I may try in the future. The bottom line is, though, iTunes AppStore has been an enormous success to the point that Intel felt the need to do something. (and Microsoft has been "trying")

Oh and if you don't want to litter your system with intrusive Apple software, you can always use it in a virtual machine. That's what I do actually so that my system is not littered with useless Apple services. (such as Bonjour)

But why does Intel need an App store for that?

Maybe Intel plans on transferring some of this x86 client base over to Meego or Windriver Android (x86)?

If people want a package manager they should use Linux. Windows has no need for a package manager. If you really need a central location for software go to Download.com.

i havent used an optical drive in so long for installing programs...

virtual optical drive, and DDL's for me.

Virtual device's aye Aig? What might you be up to :hmm:

No clue about Meego, Windriver or Android. I just figure this app will probably come standard on most Intel Atom based net books eventually no? I can't imagine vendors saying no to throwing more bloatware on your retail device and I'm sure any layperson could appreciate the ability to get software/support all in one place.

I dislike the fact that apple pushes itunes app too aggressively, I didn't even have an ipod and when I tried to install quicktime player, they put itunes on my machine.

any alternative to itunes better be open source service.
