Intel is succeding and AMD will have serious problems.

northwood aint even out yet, why you guys comparing then? higher cache haha, they could of just said that and never put it in who knows, intel just a bunch of liars anyway.
 
i feel sorry for the majority of folk that got bought by the Intel name, a commercial that make them think if is isn't intel, it not powerful or not quality. one will only know when they have used an AMD based computer instead of Intel cpu and Intel motherboard. why pay more for celeron when you can get duron or thunderbird for much less and kick PIII/PIV's butt either way. I have celeron processor too and it will be replaced by AMD instead 🙂

On the other hand because of what I wanted it required a LOT of debugging.
As a tech person it's no cost to me but for a non techie it's a lot of money to have someone debug their system.

For technically inclined people the Athlon is the clear choice, for the non techies they are better off buying p4 upgrades or prebuilt and tested Athlon systems.

AMD will not be dying anytime soon. They have processors up their sleeves that will compete with whatever Intel can throw at them.
Remember BDSM the days before AMD?
I remember the top end 386dx cpu back in I think 1990 was $3000, now Intel's top cpu is $440. Why? Serious comptetition in the name of AMD.
Without AMD we'd all be running Pentium 2's and their top speed 500mhz version would be $1500. Intel was a lazy monopoly.

My own opinion is that the Intel Northwood P4 is likely to gain the performance crown for a short while at least. I've seen a couple of the benchmarks at Hardware France which showed it running at 2.2 GHz and outperforming the Athlon XP 1900+ by small margins. Only read the benchmarks, not the whole article - it being in French and all. With the old P4 and the northwood both clocked at 1.5 GHz it appears the new Northwood core is about 10% faster.

It also seemed to be fairly overclockable - as you'd expect from a brand new core, and running on a 133 MHz FSB (nicely provided by the Asus P4B266 with proper 1/4 PCI divider), for those with money to burn it could be quite the chip to get when it comes out.

Having said that, the Athlon XP seems to fairly easily clock upto 1.8 GHz already, so I'd expect if necessary AMD could pull out a 2000+ (1666 MHz) and a 2100+ at 1733 MHz easily enough. However, with the vast majority of people still seeing AMD as the value contender in the market it probably couldn't sell a significant number of chips at the ridiculous prices asked for a 1.8 GHz P4 and upwards.
 
AMD continues to gain market share BDSM. The PR rating system has been great for them. Consumers are stupid. They only care about mhz or pr ratings.
 
Not quite, nippyjun. Some people also don't like to have to jump through hoops to get their machine in working condition. VIA seems to make owning a computer a royal pain in the rear end. Continual 4-in-1 updates that cause other problems themselves. Plus a lot of people don't have the time to make an AMD machine a functioning piece of equipment. Generally speaking, own an Intel and you-re good to go out of the box.
 
i havent installed a via 4 in 1 yet, and my system is running flawlessly. pretty good for via, and since they have the new kt266a out, its the most stable and fast, almost gaining bandwidth of that of rambus pc800. it will be soon that ddr will used in its full potential and take out pc800 in bandwidth benchmarks.

I'm guessing that his point was that if your system is fine, then you don't need to install updated 4-in-1's. VIA doesn't force you to do it, so anyone that says they do doesn't know what they're talking about.
 
Yup, if it ain't broke, why try to fix it? Newer versions are released to address certain issues or improve performance. If you are having issues, then they likely are for you, if everything is fine, you don't have issues. There have been a few times, during the life of the 4in1, where performance has been dramatically increased from one 4in1 to another, but generally 4in1s performance improvements are too little to be installing every version that comes down the pike.
 
You don't necessarily upgrade 4in1's to increase performance. You upgrade them drivers in order to bring about stability. Some of their upgrades were failures in that respect, but generally they are an improvement as far as errata.
 
AMD will start to have some major problems in the second half of '02. Intel has decided to realize the p4 northwoods true performance and enable hyperthreading a whole 6 months sooner. Silicon investor did a recent interview with Pat Gelsinger who stated as much. The inquirer is also saying that they have brought up thier 133mhzx4 bus up to the beginning of next year. From all of the reviews showing thier current i850 board being able to easily enable such a bus speed, it looks entirely feasible. Aceshardware did such a review. It equates to a good way to speedup the p4 even more. I read that quasi-review at the french site. To be more precisel, I looked at the pictures. I must say that thier choice in benchmarks leaves much to be desired. Sisoft sandra doesn't really constitute a very indicative benchmark to me. Sandra shows me that the i815e at 133mhz has a greater amount of memory bandwidth than the amd 750 chipset. Is that indicative to real world performance? It is a good indicator that sandra is not always in the right. That aside I look forward to the barrage of full reviews of the northwood on both the 845d and the 850 chipsets in this next month. Two weeks or so from now? Hopefully they will put aside the 300+ fps in quake III and give an inside perspective on programs other than that. I'm also wondering what has changed, or been enhanced on the new core. There has been so many new, cool games come out since q3 and UT. I hope to see some of those new titles like avp2 or maybe a demo of the next doom or unreal.
 
I've been putting together intels for a long time till i couldn't afford it & switched to AMD. I've came up with the following conclusions:

intel: runs cooler but slower, rip off
AMD: runs a little hotter but heaps faster, nice prices

as for marketing, an ordinary computer n00b won't spend time researching the computers. They'll buy what they see on TV, then they'll go to best buy or whatever & buy their compaq or whatever. I personally think intel is still better making server chips (benchmarking athlon MP & P4 xeon) but keep in mind that they're heaps more expensive than AMD MP.

one thing i dont get is why intel is making crappy processors than AMD? does AMD have better engineers? back in those days when my dad was putting up a cyrix 166 they still shared same chipsets & mobos but now it comes to 2 competitors. I don't want AMD to go bankrupt either. my AMD athlon XP owns j00!

I think one minor victory for AMD is that Best Buy now advertises (with great pride, I must say) their Athlon and Duron-based computers for sale. I remember just a year ago when the major chains had AMD machines, but hissed at the mention of their names. It was almost as if AMD was a poison to them, but now AMD is gaining greater favor in the mainstream markets, which is absolutely fantatsic for all us silicon-heads.
 
Very Impressive LightningCrash. I hope that that Computer running the 2.0ghz athlon was not yours. Sure its sweet to have an athlon running at 2.0ghz but look at all that crap on the desktop. 🙁 God only knows how much all of that stuff could slow it down.
 
a lot of people have gotten their athlons to 2ghz with just plain water. there isnt much stuff on the desk, unless he leaves his pump or reservior out.
