I ordered an i9 7980xe, which was delivered today, and in the box they included a tiny condom to insult me... they couldn’t even include one small enough to actually fit

It could be one of those foam variety where the OP just needs to add water to get it to grow. The condom, not the CPU.

They really should have included this before hitting the buy button TBH. At least it’s ribbed.

They are thinking about the fact that if you're building a system you are probably going to buy a video card too. That's the apply the lube when you realize the only place you can buy a video card right now is Ebay at 3x the normal price. :p

I know some great places to get lube; but not video cards...

That is a very nice cpu. I am kind of curious but what do you intend to do with it?

Patch it and suffer 30% loss in processing power :awe:

This^

Edit:

On a serious note, it’s replacing my current unRAID setup due to how broken AMD and Linux are; passthrough is a nightmare too.
I resent AMD so damn much for that, I want to support them but I ended up getting boned.
The fact that the intel CPU came with that finger condom just made it funny to me, because a real condom would be inappropriate probably.

Crap, AMD has issues with Linux? I just ordered parts for a Ryzen based rig with intention of running Linux. Will be for mining for now but eventually a VM server to experiment with qemu/kvm as I eventually want to migrate my stuff off ESX and build a proper HA type setup.

I watched an unboxing video of the 7980xe and it didn’t include the finger condom, so I’m wondering if it was included as a mistake??

Notice in this photo the workers don’t wear full gloves but rather very similar finger condoms:

Passthrough is broken on Threadripper and relies on inelegant “hacks” to get it kind of working.
I also get tons of PCIe bus errors in unRAID which seems to be somewhat common:

Got unRAID up on the 7980xe without issue, passthrough works like a charm with a 1080FE; now I’m migrating data over from my backups.

Oh crap.... this might give me issues with mining. I had a feeling I should have gone Intel at least it's proven. Too late now though, stuff is ordered. I'll just have to wait and see and hope I get lucky.

You'll be fine man. AMD and open source based OS's have a fairly solid track record when it comes to working together.

I got a screwdriver with my Threadripper 1950X. Though not sure if it can be used for anything other than the socket retention...

What are you mining? I've run/tested Cryptonight-based cryptos, Primecoin, and Nimiq so far without any issues. No problems GPU mining with a 1070 Ti, either, versus my previous systems (i7-8700, Ryzen 7 1700/1600).

Threadripper does appear as two processors (not surprising given it's two Ryzen 7s glued together... okay maybe it's more sophisticated than that, but close enough :p), though, couldn't get Nimiq testnet (Luna) to use 100% without running two broswers.

Ethereum. Good to know that there's no issues. From reading that article it was sounding like AMD/Linux had some issues with PCIe devices and it specified video cards too so got me worried.

I had issues with Ryzen when it launched, but more stability with Ubuntu/Xubuntu17.04 than anything else. 16.04 seemed fine for Ethereum and in general. Not sure about other distros, or if things got better with latest version.
