Tigerdirect is selling a CPU/MB bundle which consists of eVGA's P55 FTW MB and the newly released i7 875 (essentially an unlocked i7 i870, which retails for $550) at the whopping bargain price of $540 - 90 rebates; $7 shipping, minus 12% BCB. i7 870 is Intel's answer to AMD's x6 1090T. Not only does the quad core i7 outrun the hex-core 1090T in gaming, it also keeps up with it in multi-threaded apps, depite having two fewer cores. It also uses less power.

BTW, although this cpu is retail, it doesn't come with a cooler.

That's pretty hot. Isn't the motherboard around $200 alone?

Newegg has the same MB for $188 AR, the cpu for $350 and only 2% BCB. So yeah, you're saving almost $50. But the main thing is that this cpu is a bargain at this price, given that an identically clocked, but locked i7 870 is still selling for $560. If you are patient, and don't care about the unlocked multiplier, you can wait forl i7 870's price to drop (no one knows what will happen to 860 and 870's prices, yet). As far as I know, Intel has never released unlocked processors except in Extreme versions going for $1k a pop--so Intel finally decided to counter AMD's cheaper Black Ed. processors. Hooray!

very tempting, will I see a huge jump in peformance from a Q9550? they only thing stopping me is DDR3 memory is so darn expensive these days. though that didn't stop me from splurging on the water cooled gtx480s. but I am lazy when it comes to swapping out mobos. is it worth it? or hold for next gen?

I say that if you are happy with what you have, why spend the money at all in the first place?

I upgraded from an overclocked Q9450 @ 3.2 GHz to this combo because I do a lot of h.264 video encoding. My encoding speed increased nearly 40-50% with the i875 clocked at 4 Ghz (with SpeedStep and TurboBoost enabled). Was it a nice upgrade? Yes. What is necessary? No.

So if you can hold it out, better technology will always come along and at better (or equivalent) prices.

did your encoding time really INCREASE 40-50% over the Q9450?

Absolutely. When encoding some TV episodes from my DVDs, my fps encoding went from 55 fps to 96 fps for interlaced material and 75 fps to 130 fps for progressive--both with light noise filtering.

so you mean that your encoding SPEED increased by 40-50%, not time. Thank goodness, I am upgrading from a Q6600 (at 3.3 GHz), and am hoping to see a major improvement in video encoding.

Yes, my bad.

Anyhow, back to the topic: Thanks for the post. Thumbs up!

if you have a rebate on this does it make the bcb negligible?
time to upgrade my old q6600 to something more modern.

Only coupons void BCB. So when you check out, your invoice shows the full amount paid. TigerDirect notifies MS/Bing. You send in your rebate to an independent third-party rebate center providing the UPC and a copy of your invoice. Wait forever. Done. So unless the rebate center is in bed with BCB, which I highly doubt, then it won't void your BCB.

BCB has been very good at notifying you that you've earned CB--minutes after the order goes through. I've had very good experiences with TD rebates in the last 5 years.
