The obligatory intel vs AMD question....

So I am thinking about a new system and have always been in the intel camp. However after doing some research the AMD ryzen's seem to be pretty damn good bang 4 buck.

I am just looking for any feedback from anyone experienced for pro's and con's for either to help with my decision. I do game but not that much anymore, so it is less of a factor. I do some multi-tasking with many windows opened sometimes.

Any stability issues going with either intel or amd? Motherboard issues? etc? I will not be overclocking necessarily. Looking for best and stable with lowest temps.

Money is only a small factor for me but it looks like the Ryzen 3600 is as fast or faster than the i7-8700 and only costs $200 where as the i7-8700 is over $300.

Thanks.

Now, AMD gives a great price versus performance, along with overclocking support on all of its products. I do not know what your budget is, but if it were me I would go for an R5 3600. With it being cheaper, and outperforming the 8700 if I were you there would be no doubt in my mind to go with AMD on this one. If you want a motherboard recommendation as well I would recommend the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite. It has a really good vrm and is a really good motherboard for $200.

Now, to answer some of your other questions:

Any stability issues from red or blue team? No.

Motherboard issues? No.

If you choose to overclock AMD does and most likely always will support overclocking on all of their chips. Because I am recommending AMD even without the simple fact you can overclock it, overclocking is an added bonus.

Looking for the best stable and lowest temps? Well, first of all, neither of them will be unstable (assuming you left it stock, though, even overclocked you can get it to be stable) and AMD will most certainly have the lowest power draw, thus meaning lowest temps.

Hope this help!

As a 8700k z370 owner and installing a 3600 in an old cheap asus b350 asus mb I have no doubt the 3600 is the one to go for. Far cheaper leaner and just as fast. Feels subjectively faster in office stuff imo. But hey anyways It's just idiotic to go Intel this gen whatever you use your cpu for at this price point. Get a cheap asus/asrock b450 mb and you are good to go.

I think one one the overlooked advantages of newer zen2 is that is goes fine with cheaper ram because of the new huge l3 cache. Eg some standard cheap 3200 ram is optimal. Intel just lost an advantage there as at prior gen a 8400 was a far better offer for gaming as you could just plug in some cheap 2667 ram. That advantage is gone.

Get 3600 b450 and 3200 cheap ram. It's quite possible you have a dirt cheap upgrade path to zen3 in 2 years when zen 4 arrives and everyone and their brother wants ddr5 and the next funky core.
Its imo a no brainer.

Yeah. I already decided last week. I am going with the r5 3600. I am just waiting one the newer motherboards to be released that fix some of the issues with the current ones with the new r5 chips. So I will probably be upgrading here in Q4.

Thanks for the input.

What's your mobo budget? ASRock's x370/x470 lineup seems to be handling Matisse pretty well now that there are more UEFI updates. Not perfectly, but they are making progress. Unless you want PCIe4 I do not see any particular reason to go with x570 or b550 if you know how to pick a board properly in advance.

For example:

https://pcpartpicker.com/products/motherboard/#m=7&s=33&c=123,132&sort=price&page=1

x370 Taichi is an excellent motherboard for only $160. Major overkill for an R5 3600, yet it's only $60 more than the cheapest x370/x470 ASRock board. If I were in your shoes, I would just get one of those and call it a day. Make sure the vendor selling it has updated the UEFI though! It will not post with an older UEFI.

Even if $160 is not in your budget, the cheaper ASRock boards all basically have the same UEFI. Support was rocky for about a month. Now things are looking better for them. Might help to find someone using a particular board to find out if any major features had to be cut from the UEFI thanks to small BIOS chips as well. Some UEFIs on older boards have no mouse support in the UEFI menu, and other goofy stuff like that.

edit: also, don't waste time with the stock cooler. Try to get a Wraith Prism from a 3900x owner.

All of my "stability" issues went away, "When I learned to stop worryingoverclocking, and love the PB2/PBO.". With apologies to Dr. StrangeLove.

if you were "hardcore" into emulation for example I could see the 9600K OC being the way to go, but that's not what I get from your description, the 3600 makes more sense, it's a great CPU for normal desktop usage and gaming,

Its too bad shipping is so much, I have 2 I would love to sell, but shipping+cooler is more than you can buy a decent cooler for on Amazon or newegg.

Yeah there is that. I've got two of the silly things sitting around here myself!
