According to EETimes

Intel has formed a group with Agrer, Atheros, Marvell, and Qualcomm to push forward wireless (WiMax) standards at the expense of innovative new products.

The article mentions that Intel, with no real RF track history is able to push (force) their desired standard using the millions of marketing dollars they are spend as a threat against any other wireless standard.

Intel has no real RF history? They have the #2 spot in the 802.11 marketshare. With Atheros they would push past Broadcom as the #1 marketshare of 802.11
