Intel Heatsinks "suck"?

hey all, i personally have a watercooled dual opteron system but i helped (actually i did it all) buddy put together a new p4 system. it's a 3.0e or c if I recall but i'm just wondering if the heatsink is literally supposed to suck the air towards to board?

When i was using heatsinks all of them blew the air outward, away from the board so this seems very strange. the fan power connectors are plugged in properly so the polarity shouldn't be messed up unless the board itself is backwards.

Nope, they are supposed to blow air down onto the heatsink.

Almost all heat sink fans blow air onto the heatsink. A few are designed to work the other way.

I think he means that it was blowing air onto the heatsink. As far as I know all Intel heatsinks and most others work this way.

"Suck air towards the board" is a little vague though. 😀

I think in general blowing on something cools better than sucking air by it. I would imagine that it pushes more air into contact with the heat sink as opposed to sucking air by it (and blowing it away from the motherboard) which would allow a lot of air to sneak in around the edges of the heat sink then out through the fan without making a lot of high-speed contact with the heat sink ...

I mean, we blow on food that is too hot before eating it as opposed to holding it in front of our mouths and sucking, right? LOL

Most heatsinks blow air into the fins, it's gotta be better if 99% of heatsinks out there work this way.

For some reason the Alphas do better blowing air out of the top of the heatsink.

It's because they have shrouds that ensure that the air sucked through comes from the bottom of the heatsink.

My copper Scyth Samurai heatsink sucks air up through the fins. It doesn't have much of a shroud either. I tried reversing the fan, and actually recieved higher temperatures, so I switched it back...
