Original topic: Does the standard thermal pad on an Intel heatsink actually raise the temperature of a CPU (according to overclockers.com).
Would I be better off removing it and applying some RadioShack heatsink grease?

Well, I received to conflicting answers, here they are:
thermite88:
"The Intel retail heat sink uses the Dow Corning 340 thermal paste. It is one of the best on the market."

Mikewarrior2:
"The intel pad is your run-of-the mill graphite thermal pad. It isn't anything special, and any old generic silicone based grease will outperform it."

Who's right?

Unless newer retail heatsink use dow-corning, which is possible(same thing that g-orbs use).

The last retail heatsink i've personally used was the 700E retail heatsink, and that was a pad.

well, is it a pad, or is it a grease like substance... then again, i guess you can't tell without touching it...

What P3 do you have?

After examining the CPU it looks like it's white grease.....
Keep it or kick it?
Mikewarrior2: I'm running a Celeron 433 (Mendocino)
