Is there a difference in the desktop IGP and the mobile IGP? I was under the assumption that the desktop IGP HD4000 was more powerful than the mobile HD4000. Is this wrong?

I was running DOTA 2 on a Laptop i5-430M with a ATI 5830M and it was only doing 20 fps at 1080P. Sometimes it dipped to 10-15fps. It couldn't even handle Medium settings on Bioshock without becoming a slideshow.

Does that mean a desktop HD4000 is more powerful than an ATI 5830M (I don't think these games were that CPU intensive)?

It's the same iGPU, but mobile parts will throttle much sooner and run at lower clockspeeds than desktop parts due to TDP power constraints.

You are going to like the GTX660! I have 2 running in SLI and they are fast! Great card for the $$$

Thanks, but with the HD4000 running these games that I play so well, I'm thinking I overspent $169 for the GTX660... :(

You're kidding right? I think AMD apus are inadequate for gaming, much less HD4000. Maybe in a laptop you could live with them, but I cant imagine gaming on the igp of a desktop.

If the HD4000 is ok for moderate gaming, what about the CPU in the Intel NUC, the one with the laptop i3 CPU with the HD4000? Or is that one severely TDP-constrained, since it is a laptop CPU soldered on to the motherboard.

I wouldn't worry about your purchase. I've been living with the HD4000 for a few months now waiting for the 7XX series, and I've pretty much been limited to playing 2D games from the 90's, although I enjoy 2D games from the 90's... Anyway, your 660 is SO MUCH better.

You definitely didn't. I was running Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood on a 2010 Macbook Pro's iGPU, and it was... playable. But it becomes immensely more enjoyable when framerates don't dip in intense scenes and stuttering is gone (I moved up to a GTX 670).

The games I play a lot of, (EVE, Civ 5, Guild Wars 2, Minecraft) run well enough at 1920x1200 at medium-low settings on HD4k. At lower resolutions I bet it's quite decent. I'm not saying I don't love my discrete GPU but it wouldn't be painful to use the iGPU temporarily.

Well I get the 660 tomorrow so we'll see then. Another night of Dota 2 on the iGPU awaits. :)

HD4000 is between GT 620 and GT 630
GTX 650 and above consider upgrade

I got my GTX 660 before a week. Not i needed it. It was cheaper. Now i can play COD4, HAWX 2, Shift 2 constant 60fps with adaptive sync on. GTX 660 is like idle.

When i play those games on HD4000 (3570) i got to do the below in order to get min 30fps.

Hawx 2: Res reduced to 720P 2x AA
COD 4: Could play full HD but shadows and AA totally disabled
Shift 2: was very hard to play. as a racing game. but i did to reduce all to low

My friend when you slap that GTX660 in your 3570k rig and fire it up you will be amazed! Overspent? At $169 you should have bought 2 to run in SLI:cool:

:) Just played through Bioshock Infinite on ULTRA 1920x1200 settings and it was enjoyable.

lol go back to the 4000 in a week or so and see how it feels. even your 660 would be too slow for me for that game at 1920x1200 on all Ultra cause IMO it needs vsync bad and you cant come close to staying above 60 fps.
