Yep... Like I said before, motherboards do appreciate in value, while CPUs go down to near zero value. I just need to play it smart, and they do save quite bits of money. Every components I can still buy new except motherboard.

I fear to see the Celeron G540 and Pentium G850 will remain in "launched" status up to 2020 (when Windows 7 ends all support), and by then, they all depreciate down to less than $5 shipped each on eBay, including new ones made in 2019. By 2020, I'm figuring out how many generations behind from Sandy Bridge I'll be with 2019 G850, and I'll tell people my processor is only 1 year old.

Nice fabrication, but I've never resold any computers in my life so far, actually (last used computer I sold was in 2008). I keep everything and then donate to recycling center later if zero value is reached. I have lots of LGA775 Allendales I don't need anymore.

It's intentional, POS cash register does not require i7, but single core G470 might also be not favorable option. They gave options for quad core i5 a dual cores

Yes, that's right. My biggest mystery question of the day is why some of them are still using Sandy Bridge CPUs? Is it because they're more compatible with Windows 7 than Ivy Bridge and Haswell?

Their loss is my gain for every new pulled G540 they don't need.

They are not more compatible than ivy bridge or haswell, win has support for all of these.
Reason why they are going with older specs is to minimize costs of anything that can be got for cheaper and will serve same purpose, since POS is not doing anything CPU intensive, they might get good rebates from Intel on CPUs and Q type chipsets on large orders of older stuff.

While not interested in buying, I successfully locate one 2015 i5-2400. Type in item # 182354276039 on eBay search. Working hard to find a 2015 or 2016 i3-2120 I need urgently. Otherwise, I should be fine with G850.

I am glad and wish they will never do exactly that. Some stores in my area were still selling 2006-07 Core II duo models in 2012 for as high as $100.

Why bother? You spend money on an i5 you are set and don't have to scavenge old rubbish. There is a fine line between cheap and throw it in the bin for every product. Buying an old dual core from 2011 has crossed that line.

While I can see a vaguely plausible scenario whereby someone on this forum has paid more for a board than it originally sold for because of some scenario whereby it was essential to keep an old computer working until it could be properly decommissioned, but apart from incredibly niche scenarios like that, who would bother? Who knows whether a second-hand board 100% works, or whether the previous owner thrashed it with say a serious overclock, poor cooling and/or 24/7 CPU saturation.

If boards actually appreciated in value, it would stand to reason that CPUs would hold their value in a similar manner, partly because most CPUs aren't overclockable and they die a lot less often than boards do. After all, what good is a board without a CPU?

- edit - I've just checked most of the boards I've used in the ~13 years I've been in business, and of the models that were on ebay, they were all selling for approximately half the price that I originally paid for them, except for one 2012 board, and one 2014 board which is selling for triple what I paid for it, but frankly I'd file that one with the loonies who try to sell say Amiga 500s for £1000 UKP because some sap might actually pay that kind of money for them.

Well to certain level buying used dell or hp office rig with westmere/sandy for $150-200 is good for many, stockpiling old cpus is not so good idea.

Even if some old motherboards do depreciate, they never sell for less than $10 shipped, and 90% of sellers I've seen demand $20 shipped minimum as refurbished. Used Pentium 4s are going for $1 each shipped now.

I'd still rather see something recognizable as a 64-bit x86 CPU in there than some PoS 32-bit ARM chip running at sub-1 GHz speeds or whatever.

I believe it was already claimed out by insurance, so it's already paid to POS buyer free of charge, and maybe it heads to recycling center next. But still, don't expect to see many 2015-2020 Celeron G540s out there. Only less than 100 made per year. eBay sales history for G540 shows the one I have is the first 2015-built sold so far this year.

Yes you can use it most of the time as a computer, because it is one technically, it's basically industry-grade desktop with retail gear attached. I guess you for sure seen one in your grocery store.

Edit: I have been working in several manufacturing firms, products never get scrapped just like that, insured or not, companies would go bankrupt if any new POS terminal damaged by shipping would be discarded. They replace the bad parts and it will be finally sold.

Yes, that's what I thought, not cost-efficient to dissemble it. I wouldn't allow. But it was indeed pulled out, and photo shows it clearly (L538) using Haswell-die. 38th week of 2015 year.

If anyone know where I can get new leftover H61 boards regardless of price (I'm flexible), let me know. I need about 10, assuming I'll keep buying new G540s and G850s until year 2020 when Windows 7 ends all support for POS systems (averaging $8 or less shipped each after further depreciation).

I don't see the point. A 2017 G850 is going to perform exactly the same as a 2011 G850. What difference does manufacturing date make?
