and didn't need to be replaced every 2-3 years. That's just a lengthening of the replacement cycle, not the "death of the PC". The second trend is that with decent smartphones and tablets, people who never really needed a PC - your stereotypical grandma who browsed the web and used email on a crappy Windows desktop loaded down with malware - had a more lightweight option that served their needs. Maybe the $300 eMachine piles of junk are going away (and good riddance), but again, that doesn't equate to the "death of the PC".

If the $300 e-machines mainstream desktops are going away, then that indeed is the death of the (mainstream) PC. All too often enthusiasts forget that those mainstream PC sales, pay for the R&D expenses for their enthusiast-level chips. The ecosystem is like a food pyramid, feeding the R&D at the top.

Hi, I have a question pertaining to the Intel Haswell line.

Will the 2014 "refresh" as they are calling it still be compatible with the 1150 socket. I ask because if I can get away with an i3 for now for the current 2013 Haswell and upgrade to an i7 for the refresh 2014 Haswell, thats what I would like to do OR is the 1150 socket going to be phased out quickly?

Anyone know or can shed some light on this? Thank you.

Hi,
As far as standard 1150 and the "refresh" go, you will need to upgrade ur CPU as the standard CPU is designed for the 80 to the 87 (1150 socket) series boards hence why they're bring the new "refresh" CPU's out for the 97 series boards and u wouldn't be able to use the refresh CPU on the 80-87 series boards, I'm in the process of upgrading to the refresh board, and believe standard 1150 socket only go up to 3.9ghz (in australia) in the i7 and "refresh" they go up to 4.4GHz in the i7 (Australia) also refresh rate and speed should be quicker, hope it helps
