Intel G2 or Vertex?

Hi guys,

My 150 GB Raptor X is almost full, and to make a long story short, I'm planning on grabbing a SSD for the speed boost, swapping the Raptor into a spare computer, and swapping the spare computer's WD 640 GB Black into my main computer to install my games on, and for backup storage (I already have a WD 640 GB Blue for storage).

I'm using Vista x64 right now, and I plan to buy Windows 7 sometime in the future. It could be a while before I pick it up, though. I also may end up buying a newer SSD and using the one from this purchase in a laptop with Vista x86 if SSD prices come down significantly in the future.

TRIM / garbage collection, ease of use, and capacity are my main concerns. I could probably get away with a 60-80 GB main drive, but I'd feel more comfortable with a 120 or 160 GB drive (unless I can install applications like Word, Photoshop, etc. on a secondary drive... is that possible?). I heard the Intel drives are only supporting TRIM on Windows 7, and that'll be their only form of garbage collection. If I plan to hang on to Vista for another year, should I steer clear?

What's my best bet, and what are the cons compared to its competitors?

Thanks.

IMHO, it doesn't matter. Both will be noticeably faster then the Raptor, and it's unlikely that you could tell the difference in a blind test between the X-25 and Vertex. I think the X-25 (g1 or g2) and all the indilinux controller drives (of which the vertex is one) do a good job, and are fine to use. Just don't get a jmicron drive now, since they are inferior to the other SSD drives now.

I'd probably go with the Vertex 120gig, to get some extra space over the 60/80gig drives.

What about the issue with garbage collection on Vista? I know OCZ has custom firmware that'll do it right now, but is there any word about TRIM support on non-Windows 7 OS's for either drive?

Vertex or G2, go with the one that has the best GB/$ and buy the largest drive your budget allows you to. The larger capacity drives have slightly better performance for both companies with the 160GB G2 probably being your best performer in the MLC segment.

Not sure for Linux or Mac, but I believe TRIM won't be retro-fitted into any existing Microsoft OS. So only Windows 7 going forward (plus anything released after 7) will have TRIM support.

What? the DRIVE supports it... the OS does NOT if you use vista or XP... there is no way around it. If microsoft doesn't support it in windows vista you think intel or OCZ will add it in somehow? You want trim you get win7, period.
