Intel g1820t - Why isn't this available for purchase?

I've been waiting for this chip for about a month now and I have not been able to find it anywhere. It was released, technically, in December. I haven't found any indication that this was supposed to be OEM only.

Anybody know what's going on? I wanted a low power chip for my updated file server. I'd rather get a i3-4130t than a regular g1820, but that's $50 more and probably more power than I need for a file server.
 
Because they aren't available through retail. They are purchased by companies to use within their system like Dell or HP, they are OEM.
 
Well then. I think I'll get the i3-4130t then. More power never hurt anybody, unless it involved more power behind a shin kick. That has hurt many people.

This is disappointing though. I probably shouldn't bother to ask if AMD has a low power alternative to the g1820t?
 
There are many "S" and "T" CPUs that are difficult to obtain. I wanted a 4570T for my wife's fanless system, but they are only available from weird vendors I've never dealt with. Neither the 4560T nor the 4765T are readily available from the average vendor. It seems that over the years, most vendors have quit selling tray CPUs, which is a real shame for the enthusiast, imo.

I was wondering if this was a recent development. I remember that low power sandy bridge models were available at newegg a few years ago.

Shintai: I thought that might be true. I'm going to get the 4130T anyway. At least I will be guaranteed a low power draw and I might have the horsepower to use some of WHS 2011's transcode features. with my current machine, that uses a low power athlon x2, i relied on the end machine to do whatever was necessary with the files. From what I've gathered, with WHS 2011 and some plugins, you can stream to an android device and let the server do the heavy lifting.
 
You arent going to save much power just by switching to that chip. In all likelihood the idle power would be the same. So if the system spends 98% of its time idling then 98% of the time you'll be gaining nothing. There's no way the power savings could ever make up for the cost of the upgrade.

I'd be surprised if you garnered even a 5W average power savings. It would take 10 years to save $50 off your electric bill lol.

I moved my server from a quad i5 4570 (overkill much?) to a pentium G3220. Exact same idle power, 23-24w. Had a i5 2400s before that and it idled the same as my old 2500k.

The T and S CPU's save nothing on idle, they only save power on full load and even then its debatable because they save power by being slower so they will take longer to complete the task so in reality they might not save power at all.

They're for OEMs with crummy cooling thats all really.
 
As most people said, you need more performance per watt to save power, not a CPU with an artificially constrained power consumption achieved by outright capping of performance, that's only useful for either thermally bound scenarios or power bound scenarios when you have a very low wattage PSU. In fact T models tend to be LESS power efficient then normal CPUs. A better way to save power would be under-volting. Another way to lower power consumption is to install a more powerful cooling solution as the static power increases with the temperature.
 
If you want to save power then cap your freq and remove the cpu fan. You'll have to do some live testing in your system, but a 2 core 2 thread 22nm intel can run fanless under most loads at 2GHz under decent ambient conditions.
 
Just tested a G1820 vs a i3-4130T (on a mini ITX mobo and 12V supply + pico psu)
idle both 13-15W
prime95 39W and 47W
furmark 42W and 29W
prime 95 + furmark both about 55W

Graphics on the 4130T are a bit faster.
 
I would guess you can get comparable power usage just by limiting the max clock using the windows power settings,
