I know this is from the Inquirer, but since it is an editorial, I found it interesting...

AMD Design will Kill Competition

If this ends up playing out as the author describes, it will be interesting to see what advantages this headstart will be giving AMD. For once Intel will actually be designing a chip to be compatible with an AMD design and not vice versa.

I'm not a fanboy of either side and honestly wish something like the PowerPC or Itanium caught on so that we could get rid of x86 and start with a new design to base future enhancements on...but I really do love the competition we have going between these two companies. AMD is continuing to really step up and its causing both companies to really put out some great processors.

Edit: Apparantly I suck at the internet....new link

It's end-user software needs that prevented PowerPC and Itanium from being successful, not problems with their respective architectures.

intel will outmarket amd and people will think that intel invented x86-64 soon after. so amd doesn't really have them beat

I know. What I was saying is that it would have been nice if these could have provided the necessary speed (by emulation) and price point that would have made it attractive to end users to buy so that we could have weened people off of x86. Apple did it with the Power PC. That processor had to run old Mac programs in emulation mode, but it was fast enough to make this not a problem. In the end Apple was able to switch completely over to Power PC. I imagine very little code is being run these days that has not been recompiled to run in Power PC natively.

If Intel had played its cards well (and assuming they could have gotten the processors up to speed), selling a desktop version of the Itanium that ran old programs in emulation mode and newly compiled ones natively could have taken the steam out of AMDs new "success".

I wasn't tryign to say that AMD had them beat...I just liked the fact that for once (at least to my knowledge) the roles have been reversed where Intel may be forced to follow an AMD design instead of vice versa.

I'm sure Intel will come out with a great 64bit x86 processor that will give AMD a run for its money. I just like the competition...it works for me quite well.

I don't get how AMD can afford to sponsor freaking F1 cars (who watches F1?) and all that, but won't run a freaking TV ad. I don't think they understand marketing principles. If people don't know what your product is THEY WONT BUY IT.

It's NOT competition. AMD is too stupid to compete!!!!

I agree with you on that. AMD definitely needs to stop marketing to nitch product segments. I'm not saying they should abandon things like LAN party sponsoring and whatnot, but some quality commercials would definitely be a big boost in terms of recognition.

You should've stopped right then. ;)

Yeah...I thought twice about posting for that reason alone...but since the article wasn't about some speculation (gross rumor) about the next greatest graphics card from Bitboys...I figured it was semi-safe.

for the same reason that hp, west, and tag heuer sponsor F1.
