Intel Extreme graphics is comparable to either

1) 5 ounces of human excrement
or
2)A Savage 2000 based product (anything made my S3) / A Geforce SDR that has consumed about 3 beers and asked to run 2 miles.

My theory is that the "Extreme" really stands for "Extremely Slow." It works fine if you your idea of PC gaming is Bejeweled. Otherwise, go for a Mobile Radeon. I've seen a lot of laptops with the low end versions, which should do fine for moderate gaming. If you want to play Max Payne 2 on your laptop, go for a Mobile 9600. If you need the laptop for 3D modeling work on the road, then look out for something with a mobile Quadro FX Go. I'd definitely go for a Centrino without an IGP for your laptop no matter what you pick because battery life counts for a LOT when you are looking at laptops. Don't get seduced by the high clockspeeds of the Pentium 4-M's and Athlon M's when the Pentium M on the Centrino is where it is at. I think there is a new version of the Centrino package that has 54Mbps WiFi built in. You might want to keep an eye out for those when shopping.

any other crappy onboard video.
pci video cards, other junk 😛

well it's not really powerful... comparable to i'm guessing a Riva TNT (just a guess as i said) but it is not very powerful.

Picked up one of the $560 Inspiron 1100's with this graphics chip. It's not that horrible. I can play Quake III and Serious Sam at 1024 x 768, if I turn the quality WAY down. I got like 1250 in 3dmark 2001 if anyone wants to use that as a point of reference.

I have version 1 on my 2.53 p4 machine at work and it runs MS Flight Sim 2004 at about 20 FPS with most settings on medium high. 20 fps on FS2004 is pretty good for on board graphics. At home I am going to have to use version 2 until I get my 9800p for my 3.0 p4 at home.

hi saurav, intel graphics cannot be compared with the GeForce series or the Radeon 7200 and above as intel extreme graphics do not support hardware T&L,antialiasing, anisotropic filtering etc.

i can bet money that you would never go above 15fps in ut2k3 at 640X480 lowest settings. it is that bad.
Like said above can be compared to, but is probably still slower then

monkeys with crayons
an etch a sketch
pen and paper
light bright
a picture book

Please note that all of the above methods are great alternatives to the intel extreme graphics chipset, and although more expensive, these methods do out perform it in all tests, including pixel shading, vertex shading, memory bandwith, and fillrate.

How many more posts are going to compare IEG to a lite brite? Everyone knows it's not a Radeon 9800XT....so I'm not sure what the point of these posts is, since they stopped being funny a week ago.

As I stated earlier, I got ~ 1250 in 3dmark 2001, which is quite a bit slower than a Radeon 7200. Probably slower than the original Geforce. Good enough for Quake III, UT, Serious Sam, etc, at low to med quality settings. Not good enough for any newer shooter.

Am I the only one that thinks IEG2 is half decent? I KNOW it's capable of playing Battlefield 1942, just like the onboard video (gf4 mx?) on my Nforce2 board can do Everquest.

At worst it's probably comparable to other onboard video. Does anyone have anything constructive to say, like, oh, I don't know, a BETTER onboard video solution?

It's cool to have it as a backup. When my 865 board is no longer my primary board, my friends can come over and still play recent games with me. I can install windows on a new board with it without ganking my Geforce 4 TI from my main rig, etc etc. Like railer said, I think the jokes were old...only months ago.

IEG2 does not have Hardware T&L. I've seen *many* people with issues trying to play modern games (BF1942 in particular) on it. If it runs for you without terrible graphical corruption, consider yourself lucky.

The NForce2 IGP and ATI's new RADEON IGP chipsets absolutely blow it out of the water, as was stated above numerous times. It's not even in the same league. Even a GF2MX 32MB PCI crushes it.

Its main feature is that it is exceptionally cheap, and as sort of a fringe benefit it runs some older 3D apps acceptably. It's not a solution for anyone that wants to run newer games with DX8.1/DX9 features.

Exteme is a word marketing people use to try to grab the money of dumb teenagers. Of course we know it is a euphamism for crap in the computer industry.
