Helloes, I am curious what comes in the box of a 6850, the only thing I am interested in would be the thermal paste, is it Arctic Silver 5? or whatever its called

Is that one good enough if you don't overclock or should one focus on getting the arctic silver 5 anyhow?

There is thermal paste is on the stock heatsink, but it's not AS 5 AFAIK.

It should be fine if you don't plan on overclocking the chip.

Yeah, paste is pre applied on the stock HSF. But only in your dreams will it ever be Arctic Silver, or any of the famous brands.

But I don't need it unless I am overclocking? Do I get any drastic performance increases if it has better colling too? its a gaming rig.

Last question would be, if arctic silver is really really good, how do I get the shit off of the heatsink fan? to be able to apply arctic silver on the cpu

Get the arctic surface purifier. It will last you a long while too as you do not need a whole lot to clean the surface of your hsf and cpu:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835100010

You can overclock your C2D with the pre-applied thermal past on the stock HSF, but do not expect miracles and stunning overclock results.
A cheap heatsink on new egg can get you quite far for overclocking. At this moment, I am using an rather old HSF from my old setup that ran a Athlon XP 2600+ @ stock.

I am still using my Zalman CNPS 7000cu-LED. @ idle the processor sits at around 30C and load during gaming around 45C and Orthos 100% load after 3 hours @ 59C. This will be replaced next week by a lapped Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme with a Scythe S-Flex SFF21F.

If you want drastic cooling perfomance I can suggest
1- AS-5
2- Lapping your IHS to a nice flash smooth surface or mirror finish (starting from 300 grit all the way up to 2000 grit)
3- Lapping your HSF to a mirror finish.
4- adding more fans to your case both intake and exhaust.
5- The most drastic measure to cool your cpu, removal of the IHS (I do not suggest doing this!!)

IMPORTANT!!!
Lapping or removing your IHS will void your warranty.

I did lapped my Zalman cooler to a mirror finish. from 220 grit to 1500. it took me a good 2 hours to get to this result.

When you apply AS-5 you only need a small thin vertical line across your Core 2 Duo's IHS. On the following link, choose which cpu you are going to choose to apply AS-5 on:

This video might me of some help:

Good Luck! :)

Nope, not a single FPS*.

Last question would be, if arctic silver is really really good,

It isn't, but Arctic Cooling's MX-1 or MX-2 is really, really good. Of course, if you're gonna use the factory heatsink, you won't need them, anyway.

how do I get the shit off of the heatsink fan?

Isopropyl alcohol is all I've ever used, at least for the past 15 or 16 years.

* FPS= frames per second

I wouldn't put down AS-5 that easily Myocardia :)

Even today AS-5 is an excellent compound and does its job well, but you're going to have to deal with the conductive nature of silver when it bleeds.

Thanks for mentioning MX-2 Myocardia that is a great one!
Here is a link in how well MX-2 does compared to AS-5: http://www.tweaktown.com/revie...ermal_paste/index.html

Who put down AS-5? I'd call it either great, or very, very good. As a matter of fact, it's what I've been using, because the last time I bought TIM, newegg was out of MX-1, and MX-2 didn't exist yet. However, both MX-1, and MX-2 outperform it. That, at least to me, makes it only very good. See the difference? Oh yeah, MX-2 isn't the best, either. IIRC, that newest Shin-Etsu outperformed it slightly.

The influence of basic vs esoteric thermal compound approaches zero if both mating surfaces are clean and flat. A very good surfarce finish (gauge block) maximizes metal-to-metal contact for optimum heat transfer. The delta T should be within 1C under controlled environment using calibrated equipments.

Ever worked in a machine shop? The surface attraction alone is strong enough to keep two gauge blocks bonded together!

actually, my intel stock hsf didnt come with any thermal paste on it at all whatsoever. i never planned to use it anyways though.
