Intel e6400 Overclocking.....

I am trying to get it stable at 3.7 ghz on the computer below. I have tested the ram and motherboard to be stable @ 6 x 462 with default voltage (orthos for 12 hours with 4-4-4-10 ram timings). Now, when I try to change the multiplier from 6 to 8 orthos will fail within 10 minutes. 3.6 ghz is stable at 1.365 volts in the bios. 3.7 ghz will boot to windows fine at that voltage but Orthos will not run stable for more than 10 minutes no matter what voltage I use. I have used up to 1.425 volts (hotter than a you know what) and every time it fails at around the same time. I have bumped the nb voltage and vtt up a little but that didn't help (actually failed quicker). If the motherboard was 100% stable at 462 on default volts does that mean it's just that my chip cannot make it any farther clockwise without more volts? My freezer 7 pro does not do a very good job at 3.7 with idle temps at 49 and load around 70!!!


Also, do any of you keep c1e enabled when you OC? I know that the processor will run cooler but when I have used it the only time it uses the 8 multi is under orthos. Playing COD 2 and such it will be at the 6 multi. Any thoughts?

getting an E6400 stable at 3.7Ghz is nigh impossible. the 3.733GHz overclock in my sig was at 1.55v BIOS (1.52v idle, 1.48v load) (on Ultra120, 39C idle, 63C load). and that was only stable for a few hours. it is good to disable C1E while finding a stable OC, and then enabling it only when you find that OC.
You're not going to notice a real-life performance boost from 3.6 to 3.7. I'd just be happy with 3.6GHz.

Also 3.7ghz let alone 3.6ghz rocks for the E6400...

I would assume it needs more voltage...When you start getting to the end of a chips ability sometimes you have to jump .025v for 1-2 fsb jump alone....I bet you need closer to 1.45-1.5v...The freezer pro is just NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!! Try a real cooler if you need to irk out another 100mhz, but as mentioned above I would be happy with what you have considering it is likely one of the best E6400 OCs I have seen with that little of vcore...

big: based on its design, I suspect your Abit MB (like many Abit designs) depends on the secondary cooling of the stock Intel CPU cooler (the air blown down and out in all directions) to properly cool its north bridge and PWM area. Since you are not using such a "downdraft" style CPU cooler, you may be getting instability due to north bridge and/or PWM area overheating. You might try adding small (e.g. 30-40mm) fans on top of the two heatsinks to replace the lost cooling.

Thanks for all the replies! As I mentioned before, I tested 12 hours orthos stable w/ a 6x multiplier. The nb and pwm areas are warm to touch under load. My freezer pro really does heat up though. For some reason my e6400 runs abnormally warm. Stock w/ stock cooler idled around 46 and got up to high 60's! Now overclocked it idles at 40 and goes up to 60 under load.

About c1e- I disable it when I am testing my overclock. But do you enable it after? It saves a lot of heat and drain on the computer right?

It saves heat and power only if you leave your computer idle. when the cpu starts to get work, it kicks it right back up to 9.

I just decided that it is not worth the heat/small performance gain too keep it oc'd. I tightened my ram timing, and will just go back to 3.4 @ 1.3v and be happy LOL. Well at least i know I can be stable @ 3.6 with relatively low volts if I ever need that 200 mhz!
