Intel DX79SI: Support 4 & 6 core SB-E? Any guesses at cost?

Given that there are only a handful of SB-E SKUs that will be initially released, I'd say it will support all the variants.

Also interesting that it has the 8 DIMM slots, I remember only seeing 4 DIMM slots on all the X79 boards at Computex.

There's no way to confirm how accurate, but the article definitely did say 3 x PCI-E 3.0. Great to hear that it should take care of all the SB-E core counts. As for the 8 DIMMs that's the reason why I am so interested in this motherboard. The only other 8 DIMM LGA2011 I've seen is that crazy Frankenstein prototype Danushi Bay with the LGA1366 grafted on too.

coming out with a new 1366 chipset seems retarded.

I don't see the reason for X79 to support LGA 1366 either. Maybe the socket may not be as dead as everyone thinks. Intel might have new CPUs on the way that are suited for that socket. Who knows?

I hope we see new 1366 CPU's too, since im on 1366, i think its unlikely though.

The only advantages I could see is adding support for lower power CPUs, a few features like SATA 3.0/USB 3.0/PCIe 3.0, and not having to buy a new high end CPU cooler.

I seriously doubt that this is legitimate. Intel wants to kick the LGA 1366 parts right off of the roadmap.

That's what I heard too, but Xbit is usually quite accurate. Any ideas as to what this Intel motherboard would cost? Would it compare to the top level motherboards from other manufacturers thus be compatible in price as well?

They should throw is old-1366 owners a bone and release a $300 6-core SKU and drop the quad to $200. I would upgrade to the 6-core to get me by until SB-E. Right now, the 6-core is just so much more, and not that much better than SB in most applications.

yeah except the article says the 1366 board will only have PCIe 2. This is totally pointless IMO.

I think its possible that Intel still has quite a few lga 1366 chips in the vendors hands that havent quite been sold out thanks to Sandy Bridge.

Maybe Intel is appeasing their partners by supporting backwards compatibility on the new boards. If there is also a price drop on lga 1366 chips at the time DX79 hits shelves, I could see many value oriented consumers grabbing a 1366 chip and a DX79 board with the idea that they could upgrade to a lga 2011 chip two years later.

Upgradeability is the holy grail for professional system builders on a budget.

As for the Enthusiest DX79 board I cant wait to see it. I think the reason why we didnt see it at computex is because Intel wanted to keep it close to their chest and wait and see what Buldozer is capable of.

I thought it was odd that all the motherboard manufacturers didnt display their high end boards at computex, now we know why. :)

apparantly you missed this

"Release of two different types of mainboards for two different sockets"

The 1366 board will not be able to run a 2011 CPU, it is not physically possible. How would you go about getting a 2011 pin/contact CPU to fit into a 1366 pin/contact socket?

Oh I didnt miss it, I just asserted that the authors interpretation was wrong.

The way I interpret it is that the 1366 chip will fit in the 2011 board. Why else is the board called the DX79SI? If the board only supported 1366 then it would not be a X79 platform. It would be an X58 Plus or something of that nature.

I think that the xbit article is pretty clear:

"The DX79SI mainboard is designed for extreme enthusiasts with no limits in mind. The mainboard will support LGA2011 microprocessors

The DX79TO mainboard is aimed at more conservative users. The platform will support LGA1366 microprocessors"

So even though both motherboards use the identical X79 chipset, one has the newer and the other has the older socket.

This is exactly how i understood the article as well.

There's one thing I don't understand, given your geographical location. Why can't the Nucks win at TD Garden? It's owned by a Canadian bank!

OK, off topic. I admit it! So back on topic... I've been looking around to get any inkling of when the SB-Es will be released and the closest I've been able to find is late Q3 or early Q4. Is that deemed to be accurate?

I dont know why we cant win at there rink, but it doesnt matter they cant beat us at home either and the last game is here! :)

Edit: Q4 has been rumored to be the release date but i think we will see it first week of jan, just like 1155 SB was announced.

So Sir Stanley's Cup goes to whoever has the most home games? Then they didn't have to play them, they could just have announced the winner when they drew up the schedule!

I wondered why the first SBs were issued after the big selling Christmas season. It seems to me that they could have sold many thousands of them on Cyber Black Friday. I'd hate to see them do that to SB-E. But I guess that the marketing departments of CPU manufacturers don't seem to be located in the same galaxy as the rest of us.

I agree that earlier would be better for xmas sales, thats a no brainer.

However you also have to consider that they will have no competetion from AMD(unless bulldozer is alot better than the leaked info we have so far). So they(intel) are in no hurry and people wanting that level of performance will still buy it whenever it is actually released cause there are no other options.
