THis may sound very noobish but my X58 has a molex connector right above the pci-e slot near the rear of the board. What exactly is it there for?

if you have a high end viedo card, it's better to connect this or that sata power connector.
 
The manual for a ECS X58B-A says this about the molex by the video card

ATX4P: Auxiliary Power Connector for Graphics Interface

Make sure to connect a 4-pin molex power cable to ATX4P; otherwise the system will be unstable.
