Intel Duo and AM2 performance wise for the price?

okay i have aroudn $800 dollars this month a little more next month but i want a system that includes a 74raptor and 520 modstream. so i need help deciding between the AM2 3800+ or this intel duo yonah

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819111180

i'll have to do some research on some mobos for both sockets though, i'm only familiar with AMD 939 boards and below...so this is all new stuff to me. the video card im looking for will be about a 7600gt or x1800xt depending...little help please?

I'd wait a little while, 15th I think, and look at the Conroe chips instead. Your Yonah is suddenly going to become outdated bigtime if you buy now. I'm a big fan of AMD, but it looks like they're going to have to concede temporary defeat, since the AM2 isn't exactly lighting up the world with it's performance numbers compared to Conroe at least, the A64 is still a damned fast chip by it's own right.

yea and the dual cores are supposed to drop something like 30%. wait til july 24th. it'll be well worth the wait

which mobo for AM2 is the good standard mobo these days? and which ocz ram would best fit my 3800+? sorry for going back and forth, but i've decided to just stick with the AM2 3800+

The lowest-end C2D will probably be faster and cheaper than the X2 3800+, even after price drops.

After C2D's release, there's no reason to go with AMD. 😀

Hey, to each his own.

People have been bitchin' about Intel's performance and pricing for years. They finally put out a highly impressive product and at a lower price, and folks refuse to use it.

😀

As for me, I always go with whatever offers me the best bang for my buck. I'm about to sell my Dell refurb myself, I just built a new system last week...

Cooler Master Cavalier 3 (black)
Antec 500w SP 2.0
Abit NI8 SLI (which I am not fond of but had laying around - TD for 49.99 deal)
Pent D 930
2GB Corsair DDR2-667
160GB Seagate 7200.9 (Outpost - 49.99 deal)
NEC ND-3550A
Sony 16X DVD-ROM (pulled that from my Dell)
eVGA 7900 GT
Audigy 2 ZS (pulled from my Dell)

Less than $900 shipped. I'll sell the Dell for $900 easy (Pent 630, 2GB, 7800 GTX). My budget was $0.

Conroe might be the better processor but remember most if not all the motherboards supporting conroe in the near future look to be around 200 dollars or more whereas you can get a good AM2 570 ultra board for around 100. That extra 100 would be better put to use in buying a better graphics card if you are on a budget and looking to game.

I got my conore E6600 2.4Ghz and its an awesome processor. biggest performance leap in a long long while i must say. At stock speed it beats AMD FX62 which is pretty awesome for who cheap it will be. Even the E6200 can keep up with AMD FX60...

yeah i'm gonna get the 3800+ am2 myself with the abit motherboard since the asus 570 doesn't support ocz ram because of the 1.95 voltage setting which is lame. both have passive heatpipe cooling though and i've always liked abit since i used the nf7-s back in the day =) all i need now is to find some good ocz ram which shouldn't be hard and see how much left i can spend on a video card, hopefully enough for a x1800xt

$100 946PL

id go with AM2... that way you have the upgrade path of getting AM3 when it comes out and not having to change mobo.

Wtf does that mean? AM2 is the socket. AM3 is a different socket, if it even exists on the roadmap, which I doubt it does.

Check on Newegg before you stop spreading FUD and other lies. The cheapest Conroe board is $65 shipped. Its a VIA hybrid with AGP/PCI-E and DDR/DDR2.

Other than 975X boards, what other boards are available now and C2D compatible? Checked NewEgg, couldn't seem to find any.

Look at the picture of the board. It clearly states "Conroe / Presler" right on the PCB. One would assume this is Conroe compatible due to that.

Well, even on the Asrock site:

http://www.asrock.com/product/775Dual-VSTA.htm

Conroe 6xxx and 4xxx support. The mobo is available NOW and is IN STOCK.

Great, thanks!

I really wish this board had 4 DDR2 slots, supported 4GB of ram, and also, I could care less about the agp slot, seems like a waste. But interesting none the less. I only see one other board with the same PT880 Pro chipset, a Biostar.

Okay, well I just hope you enjoy the higher-priced inferior performance that buying AMD over conroe will get you. Is it really worth having the AMD logo on the processor?

It was for a lot of intel fanboys I'm sure the feelings the same no matter what company you're a fanboy from.

fanboyism = bad for you & good for the company even when they put out a sh!tty product. personally i am a fan of my wallet and not any company 😀

So only about 2 Sub 100 dollar motherboards are avialable for Conroe? I really hate VIA 🙁, I refuse to buy anything that uses it. I can't imagine spending over 150 bucks on a motherboard..
