Intel Does it again - First Prescott processors will not be compatible with current motherboards!!

After meeting with a manufacturer in Los Angeles yesterday, we were told that the first batch of Prescott processors will not be compatible with any motherboard currently available on the market today. Before Prescott undergoes a complete socket overhaul in Q2 2004, all Prescott processors will be of the Socket 478 variety, shipments of which will start in early Q4 of this year. But due to a mandatory voltage regulation spec change from VIN 1.0 to VIN 1.5, these Socket 478 Prescott processors will not be compatible with any Socket 478 motherboards. Motherboards based on 865PE and 875P chipsets are among those not compatible with the first Prescotts we learned.


We know of many users that are currently purchasing motherboards based on the assumption that, because Prescotts will be Socket 478 until Q2 next year, current Socket 478 motherboards will be compatible until then. However, this assumption is highly unlikely to be true based on the information we were given on Wednesday. Intel and motherboard manufacturers may be able to find a workaround, but we wouldn't count on it.

Ya, it sucks for those who just bought a $200 i875P. It looks like a 3.2GHz P4 might be the i875P/i865PE last stop. I'm glad I put upgrading off. 🙂
 
I have a feeling we may see some kind of workaround. It may be a third party device though, not sure how many people will want to deal with that. Defintiely sucks.

Come on! Mainboards are disposable items now...

People go out and pay $500 for a video card that's obsoleted in six months by a newer entry. They should be screaming bloody murder!

Mainboards are MUCH cheaper.

I don't see what the big deal is...

For those who can afford to drop $500 bucks ona video card it isn't a big dear. But for those who can only afford to buy upgrades at a peace at a time will have some definite issues with this.
 
I don't know if it is entirely Intel's fault. I used to work for Intel when they came out with their FC-2 design which required a newer motherboard because no motherboard manufacturer wanted to follow Intel suggested designs. Intel suggested designs would have cost motherboard manufacturers another $4-5 but it would have allowed them to work with FC-2 PIII processors.
 
Wasn't this already a given? How would you cram a 700 some odd pin chip into a 478-pin socket motherboard?

initially they will use the same socket as the northwood cpu: 478
 
It says Prescott ready on many mainboards from most mobo manufacturers.

It definatly says it on my Asus P4P8X, and the Asus P4P800 series.

False advertising? Class action lawsuit?

It will probably be for certain S478 boards. I remember during the BX era, some BX boards ran Coppermines fine whereas others could not because of the different VRMs used.

Yeah overclockers.com has called BS on the article saying the mobos with the new VRMs will run it. So only low quality I865/I875 mobos will have a problem with prescott support.
 
you know sooooo many intel users have told me that an AMD upgrade is useless cuz the intel will support prescott...i would be PISSED if i just bought a 875 board....
 
I have to agree somewhat with ShuttleTeam. If you can afford to drop $700 for a Prescott Pentium, a new motherboard ($150) is probably not going to kill you.
 
good thing i stuck with my 845pe and didn't wait for 865/875 and spend more money! sucks for the people that just bought them

Well I just bought one and I don't really think it sucks that bad. I've got a sick 3.0GHz/1GHz FSB system and it cost me about $400, I can't really complain, this'll be fast enough for a while IMO, by the time i need something new, I'll be ready for new memory and a new motherboard anyway probably. It would be nice to drop in a Prescott, but its not a deal breaker.

And tualatins on most Coppermine boards only required a minor pin mod, or an adapter.
 
i did just buy an 875 board ... IC7, a refurb at $89 but i came with all the accessories including retail box, so I'm not too worried 😀
 
oh wellz..this will put off my MOBO + p4 purchase planned this summer. I guess i will wait to fall and see how the Athlon 64 and the prescott performs then. At least the socket will be stablized again at that time


IN THE MEAN TIME..getting a 72 GB CHEETAH 15.K SCSI DRIVE!
 
Doesn't really matter to me, I upgrade my motherboard, RAM, and CPU at the same time anyway. I'll be waiting till the price of the Prescotts comes down to ~$200 too...

For god's sake, put a cork in it. I can't think of any other hobby where people with victim complexes threaten to sue every time things become a tad inconvenient.
