intel discontinue of p4 motherboard

i just caught wind of intel discontinuing the p4 motherboard.... for some reason that has to do with switching from agp to pci express....

does anyone know anything about this? i'm just starting to search the web for more news on this...

That makes no sense... why would they discontinue the P4 motherboard while the P4's are still being made and sold in large quantities. Maybe they will discontinue the AGP type motherboards in favor of PCIe.

Are they going to force us buy P3's or Xeon's? :laugh:

srry ment the p4 agp. should have specified.

let me explain.

i just ordered a new computer from a company, and i WAS getting an

-> ABIT IC7 P4 Intel 875 AGP8X S478
with
->Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz HT, 512K 800FSB Socket 478 Hyper Threading Processor
-------------------------------------------------------------
i got a call today saying that they will upgrade my motherboard and proccessor to a

MSI K8N NEO2-PLATINUM Socket 939 AGPX8
and
AMD Athlon64 3000+ Processor - Socket 939 .

for free, because they were just told Intel has just discontinued production of their p4 agp mobo's.

btw do u think i was upgraded or downgraded? or they are equivalent?

What else do you want to know?

Intel's abandoning AGP as fast as they can to switch to PCIe (and, theoretically, the BTX form factor for cases, but they're still getting a lot of heat from the MB/case manufacturers about that one). Officially discontinuing their older chipsets (ie, the 8XX ones) is hardly surprising.

Edit:

That's more of a legitimate question. 😛

That's a totally different CPU *AND* motherboard. I would think they would be very close in performance, with the A64 being better at games, and the P4 better at some other things (certain video encoding/decoding tasks, for instance). Read the zillion benchmarks on this site and others about the A64 CPUs for more detail than you'll ever want.

never heard of btx... only atx... got any links to give me a view?

.... i guess long term this way i can switch to longhorn when it comes out, then having to switch mobo's to get longhorn.

Don't try and run Longhorn on an ATX MB, whatever you do! :shocked:

PLEASE use the search function, and/or read the articles that AT has written on these topics. All of these things have been discussed to death.

i'm listening.... explain..... never heard of this.... i'm interested in learning something new.... 🙂
