Intel D815EEA w/PIII 800 and Win98

I just bought the intel board (D815EEA)and a PIII 800EB chip and after installing Win98 (not 2nd ed.), I can't restart the machine properly.

If I go to Start Menu and then choose Restart, I'll get the following error message after Win98 loads: "windows encountered an error accessing the system registry. Windows will restart and repair the system registry for you." So it restarts and then if I try this again, the same error message will pop up when I choose to Restart. anybody heard or experienced this prob?

So is this a problem with the hardware or Win98 not being able to recognize the PIII? I've disabled the onboard sound and I've got an ATI All in Wonder Pro in the AGP slot which should disable the onboard video. The onboard Lan is enabled. I haven't installed anything any cards yet, just the cd-rom, hd, and floppy.

Any ideas of where to get patches or do I just need to get Win98 2nd ed or Win ME?

You didn't say which PIII-800 you have - if it's an 800EB (133MHZ FSB) it may be that it's pushing the memory to 133MHZ by default - there should be a bios setting to select the memory speed if your memory is not PC133 or a memory timing selection to choose CAS3 if your memory is PC133 but isn't CAS2 capable.

If your PIII-800 is a 100MHZ FSB Version (800E)make sure all the timing settings are the most conservative for your memory, drives, etc.

The registry errors I've seen have been a result of memory not being able to work at the timing I've selected.

You'll also want to check and make sure the correct PCI bus speed dividers are selected (if the board lets you change them - For 133 MHZ FSB you need to divide by 4 to have correct PCI (and IDE) bus speed.

KR...yes he did, he said he has an 800EB....that means 133 SysBus....

any way I put together 3 system swith this board....we got them at the intel chips'n tips..anyway...I assume this is a retail board....and it came with the System cd with the drivers for it...only WinMe has direct support for the i815 chipset...win98 and win98se do not...it will load generic intel drivers for the northbridge, memory controller, pci controller and agp controller, these drivers are generic and not entirely stable....also...your error means the memory is not runnig properly. this board needs pc133 memory to use your chip...sometimes good high quality pc100 memory works fine...also you have a 512MB limit on this board and you can not use all 3 mem slots if you want to use pc133 memory....

i hope this doesn't look like I'm rambling...I hope that helps....
