Why do penryn CPUs have less cache then their conroe counterparts? I though this was basically just a die shrink and maybe some minor tweaks to the platform.

Very few have less cache than their Conroe counterparts. Only the Q9300 and Q9400 have less.. otherwise the Core 2 Duo's go from 4MB to 6MB and the quad-core chips go from 8MB to 12MB.. except, of course, the Q9300 and 9400.

To order today you will need to go to a little lesser known site. Just hit up hot deals section here or froogle to find some stores. Most of the big boys will not put them on sale until the official release date on Monday. If you have a microcenter local I have heard they have them in store.

The old pricing was just unusual due to the low number of quad core SKU's.
Now that they have more SKU's with the launch of all the new Penryn based quad cores, they have a better spread of pricing, with intermediate brackets between the lowest and highest non-extreme processors.

Q6600 @ $224 really puts pressure on AMD if it will actually be available throughout 2008. With the Q6600 at that price, Phenom 9700 must be around $200~ to be competitive and the Phenom 9900 really can't be much more (as its only slightly faster/sometimes actually slower than Q6600). With the Q6700 (2.66GHz) at $266, the Phenom 9xxx part @ 2.8GHz would have to be around $266 as well.

What's with that E7200 chip. 800Mhz FSB wolfdale, but a clock speed of 2.53? How do you figure that. It must be a 1066FSB chip or something.

Sure, but that's comparing apples to oranges....

I would imagine that if you OC'd the $1500 chip it will kick the poop out of anything else out there.. don't you think?

Man, for that price, one would hope so. At least the unlocked multiplier helps. But is that worth the huge price premium? Not for me.

I sense sour faces in AMD's heaquarters...

Seriously, AMD better come out with something. At this rate Nehalem's intro will be delayed just like the quad core penryns....
