guessing you did not read the OP or follow the link.

midding sb-3 is $650AU, so even with our tax/stupid price vs US, it is proberly $550ish US (as expected).

the top end is listed on the website as over $1200AU.

looking to upgrade from a q6600, just got to see what the boards are like or just wait for Ivybridge. Not expecting anything from Ivybridge (most improvements appear to be for lower TDP instead of performance increases).

but still, $650 cpu, $300 board(?) and no massive increase over the current $300 SB cpus for most common tasks.
 
I went to Micro Center during lunch to see when/if they will have SB-E next week. They looked in their system and found the i7 3960X. It was listed at $1149, but they do usually release new CPUs lower than what their system normally states. He said to expect it to be around $999, which is right where most sites said it will be. He also stated that it will be available for purchase on Monday. I asked him to look up X79 motherboards, but none were entered into the system yet.

It's tempting for about 10 seconds. Then common sense kicks in and you realize what a colossal fail it would be. Sorry 2K is a good amount of money no matter what you make.
 
Yeah. I'd never do it, mostly because it'd be a waste of money. I don't mind spending for cool stuff, but I like to maximize price/perf when possible.
 
They show 3x PCI-E x16, does that mean if you run 3 video cards they all stay at x16 instead of dropping to x8 now? Not that it really matters much yet.

I dont think you can, because the rest of your system still needs PCIe lanes(SATA controller, ethernet, USB, etc)

I think the options are:
1 card = 16x
2 cards = 16x, 16x
3 cards = 16x , 8x, 8x
4 cards = 8x, 8x, 8x, 8x

Unless they use a NF200

That's what the 8 DMI lanes will be used for.

DO IT!!!! Except the 2 GTX580s. Wait for 680s in a few months. But get the X79 and CPU now! 😉 I am.

I will buy it, I work at wal-mart, single, have own house, zero debt minus a measly $300 morgage. ALready got one GTX 580. Waiting on reviews, etc to buy mobo/cpu/ram.
