While I think many of taltamir's arguments are valid - I think anyone reading his posts (in this thread atleast) can clearly tell his opinion is extremely biased towards i3/i5 - and maybe rightfully so. I am personally waiting to see complete real word tests and pricing before making any judgments.

Well... I actually agree that I am really biased towards those parts; but only because of the evidence I have gathered so far. 🙂

EDIT: I looked up biased in the dictionary, I am as far from biased as possible. I am completely partial, it is just that all evidence suggests that the i5 is gonna be great. Unless this evidence is all falsified (we will know soon), than I am drawing the right conclusion. Just like you do not have to be biased to totally dismiss flat earthers and conclude the earth is round

I got an easy 4GHz on a EX58-UD3R ($150AR) with 6GB OCZ Platinum XTC (OCZ3P1600LV6GK) ($75AR) 😉

I was going to wait for the i5, but with all the delays, i said F it and just got an i7 from the ZZF deals.

I agree. I really don't see any benefit right now of going with i5 unless you're not overclocking. With current sub $200 motherboards for i7, if there was a financial advantage with i5, it'd really be for penny pinchers.

kidding aside... we are looking at maybe 100$ difference, that is not penny pinching, thats 100 dollar pinching.

170$ is the cheapest mobo for X58. P55 should have some under 100... but lets say you get quality... you only save 60$ here and get a 110$ board.
i5 you can get for 100$ less according to pricing charts.
And ram... you can save 20-30$ with 4GB instead of 6GB, or you can spend 20-30$ more and get 8GB instead of 6GB.
The total projected savings is 130$ to 190$
 
Taking the ram quantity differences out, the savings are probably only like $50 for an entire build. Cheaper still, but with quiet a few disadvantages to go with the platform it's difficult for one to choose lynnfield just to pinch $50 out of $1000+ build.
 
Im still trying to decide i have a Microcenter near me so
i7 920 $200+ msi/asrock mobo newegg $170.00 equals $370.00 sih (without tax and shipping)

This place has the cheapest P55 mobo for $139 + 200ish for a core i5 750 equals $339 (without shipping)

The price difference isn't that great for me. Even though i have my current rig overclocked a little im not really an overclocker. the higher turbo, and power consumption is making me lean towards the i5/i7(1156)

And 1000$+ build? how exactly? are you getting a gold plated case?

Look, add this to the list you made above, another 6gb of ram, a hdd, and just a little more on the gpu. But at the same time, if you can give me that gold plated case for putting down $1000+ I'll take it. Let me know when you have that gold plated case for me ok?
 
Like they are asking on that page, if these chips are on the shelf in retail in Australia why don't we have them available here and why the hell hasn't Intel lifted the NDA?

Microcenter sells the chip for $199, or has in many occasions. And $100 for a P55? Not at release. Maybe a really crappy one... I would say it is a wash. That is also comparing an i5 to an i7. If we use the S1156 i7, it could make the P55 build more expensive.

A. The motherboards and the BIOS aren't ready yet
B. There's limited supply yet to be called "official release"

1. microcenters are rare. most don't live near one
2. those prices include tax and shipping, the microcenter 199$ does not include tax and the cost of driving both ways. (they will not ship, it is in store only).
3. Microcenter only does this deal with extremely limited stock, people I have talked to who drove all the way to one found they were out of stock (and thus out of a deal), and they would be happy to sell them something else... so 5 people per MS per month is not market price. (this is btw why they will not SHIP those chips anywhere, you have to physically walk into the store to take advantage of this limited stock deal)
4. there is absolutely NO REASON why microcenter will not have SIMILAR deals for i5, selling it for less

Limited stock? You are kidding me. Surely, you are. I am sure there may be some items that have limited stock, but not the Core i7 920 and not the Q6600 when those were popular too. I never had a problem getting them - they were everywhere.

Your last point is ridiculous. You spent the last three points attacking Micro Center, then you say that you "know" they will have a similar deal for the i5. You also didn't address the Core i5 Versus Core i7. Your not comparing fairly and I find the above a really weak argument. You can stick to it, I don't care - I find it weak.

 
it boils down to: you can get +133Mhz for the same price with lynnfield, OR you can get the same clock speed (without HT) for $196. Motherboards aren't expected to launch at the $110 range, but Id expect them fairly soon after release. So you'll built a 2.66Ghz lynnfield, cheap as possible, for about (80+60-30 (8GB vs 6GB, 4 isn't enough) $110 less than a 920 would cost you.

They are not really for sale in Australia yet, the website linked now has them for 'pre order' and none of the major stores here have them for sale yet. If they were, I'd go down the road and buy one 😀

When I lived near a MC I also lived near a Fry's...I hated "shopping" at MC but Fry's was fun to walk thru and kill time browsing. I still pretty much bought everything through newegg though, even then. You won't catch me defending MC, dine away on that manwich.
 
Well considering my local microcenter has about a 100 or so 920's IN STOCK, the i7 for me is the better deal. Ended up ordering the mobo and ram from amazon to avoid CA's ridiculous tax. Went with the gigabyte UD3. Another advantage for some Core2 upgraders is that some HSF are compatible with the socket 1336 with just a bracket change (I ordered a new bracket for my xiggy). I don't have the exact figures, but for me living near a microcenter & recycling the HSF (AFAIK i5 sockets need a new HSF) my difference between the i5 and i7 upgrade was only around $30 lol. BTW, I'm typing on my new 4ghz i7 920 D0 beastie right now.
