Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

i was wondering if you guys think i should wait until this quad core drops or should i just get the E6600? What month is the 3rd quarter?

If you're going with a Core-2 System, you really should wait till next month when the prices drop significantly. At that point I would pick up an E6320 or E6420, unless you have a real need for a quad-core processor, and overclock it. Right now quad-core is overkill IMO, even at $530~ which is what the Q6600 should cost next month. Stick with an E6320 or 6420 until later this year when prices drop again, or preferrably until Intel launches 45nm processors.

Buying a quad core before the price cuts is stupid if one plans on using it for a gaming/general use system. Why pay so much more for bragging rights when it won't even benefit you? Dual core is where it's at if you don't NEED the two extra cores of a quad. Just buy one later this year when they'll be much cheaper, even if they still won't be fully utilized by many apps. At least then you'll have Barcelona to consider as well...might make things interesting.

for gaming right now the 6850 will be better, for media encoding, multitasking, and gaming in 08 the q6600 will likely be better (at least for Alan wake and Ut2007 which will make use of 4 cores)

I'm personally waiting for the Q6600 to hit $266.

There is only 1 game that my CPU has a hard time with, and that's supreme Commander.
Supreme Commander runs best on 4 cores.

That said, to the OP, April will be a good time to buy, or whenever intel drops prices during Q3, decide how bad you "need" the upgrade, and then decide accordingly.

At this point I would wait. Big savings coming through. Go dual core unless you really have a need for Quad Core.

The price cuts are planned for Q3, they could be delayed to the end of Q3 depending on whether or not AMD can produce something competitive.

FWIW the Q2 price cuts are taking place on April 22, or the first month of Q2, but who knows when in Q3 the next wave of price cuts will hit.

..I've waited this long thinking dual core e6600 would fall below 200.00 but if quadcore is going to tumble down I may as well skip dual core and go quad. Will wXP recognize all four cores??
