The E8200 was never supposed to be $160, you can get one here from buy.com for $179 as soon as they come back in-stock.

Kickass chip.
E7200 > E8400 ?
Any comparisons... ?
yeah i'd like to see them too...i would imagine that the E8400 would be faster than the E7200.

Your RAM is fine. Running 1:1, 400 FSB with the 9.5x multi of the E7200 puts you at 3.8ghz. 425 FSB puts you at 4ghz. I'd be hard pressed to think you'd get much more OC out of this chip based on the early reviews. In either case, your RAM will run those just fine at CAS4 timings.Originally posted by: Serradifalco
How will this cpu oc with the memory in my sig?
I'm just curious, what sort of improvement do you expect going from an E4400 to an E7200?Originally posted by: Fayd

Not a very interesting product at that price range.
Doesn't overclock as well as the E8400 and has 1/2 the L2 cache, yet is only a bit cheaper. IMO it would be foolish not to spend a little more and get either an E8400 or a Q6600.
meh... i'd be moving from an e4400 to an e7200. it's a good change imo.
but i'll be waiting till prices come down as well.

I just got an E4500 with a Fry's combo for $99.99 plus tax, and I sold the motherboard on eBay for a net price of about $25, putting the cost of the E4500 at about $83. I can run it at 3.33GHz (10x333MHz) with a reduced CPU multiplier (available in the BIOS on my Gigabyte G31 MicroATX motherboard). I'm using an Arctic Cooling Alpine 7 cooler and default voltage. The only problem from my perspective is the power consumption--it consumes an extra 19 Watts if I overclock it that high. I've got it in a system with a GeForce 9600GT--not the fastest video card in the world.
The E7200 has 1MB more cache, and I suppose I could run it at 4GHz on a Gigabyte P35 ATX motherboard with a 400MHz FSB (I don't think the Gigabyte G31 MicroATX motherboard can handle a bus speed like that). So I'm looking at about $53 extra for the CPU and about $20-30 extra for the motherboard (plus any extra I'd spend for a better cooler, like an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro). Maybe the power consumption would be even less with a 45nm CPU (but it would take a long time to save $83 on my electric bills). I haven't seen any performance benchmarks for overclocked processors running at 4GHz. I looked at the one that compares an E7200 to an E8400 both set to 7x333MHz to compare cache performance (3MB vs. 6MB), and the verdict is that the difference is not too significant, except in 3D games and WinRAR (about 15%). How much difference would an extra 1MB cache make?
I think an upgrade to an E8400 would be a lot better, but what do you think?

I won't see any improvement over my 3Ghz e4300, but I will get a thrill out of tweaking the e7200. I am paying for the thrill... not necessarily for the huge improvemnt in performance.
I remember as a young man looking through the computers listed in Computer Shopper Magazine and fantasizing about how much better my life would be if I owned one of those! We play a few games, surf the net, and do homework. How much better do you really think this cpu would perform? The bottom line is I want one. I want to go down that 1 ft taller slide!

Depends on what you want it for. If you just want a cheap-but-decent chip, then sure it is. If you want to overclock on an older motherboard that doesn't take to high FSB, then sure it is.
If you want a really high overclocker, then the E7200 may be better. If you want higher stock performance, the E7200 is better.

That was awesome! I can just imagine the confused look on my wife's face when I tell her that I bought this chip "because I wanted to do down that 1' taller slide." LMAO!
At $136 shipped, I may have to go down that 1' taller slide. Just to check it out.
