Hey, It appears that three more OEM E8700's have trickeled out to eBay.ca. Better hurry as two are gone already!

Except that when it comes to benching purposes, Clarkdale seems to have Wolfdale beat, and for cheaper.

Looking at hwbot world records, you'll see Clarkbars have passed all Wolfdales in SuperPi, pifast, and wprime.

definitely best dual core ever. there will be faster duals in the future but they will be incrementally more adulterated fragments of their larger brothers. For penryn it was the quads that emulated the duals, so the individual dies weren't lowballed.

i think the only "value" of the E8700 at this point is educational/experimental. would like to see one do 5.0 with air.

Only reason to get this chip is for serious benchmarking...

Zero point in buying it for normal usage.

Why is that? A 4.5Ghz E8700 is nothing to scoff at.

E8500
9.5x474

E8600
10x450

With some luck & good cooling (same as you need for 4.5 on an E8700), you've got that w/ cheaper chips.

That, & in the real world, a quad around 4 GHz is more useful for most usage, nevermind the i3/i5 duals out now that can do similar speeds.

this kind of speed would've been awesome two, even one year ago. now that i3 is here i'm kind of just desensitized about it. not sure if i want to get rid of this quad yet.

I think it's worth buying just to collect it as a memorabilia. I mean it truly is the last and best of the Core 2 Duo era, which revolutionized the CPU world in 2006. We'll never forget the day the first Conroes rolled out.

You can get in on a sweet i3 proc, that performs as well or a little better than a good quad system, for half the price of this e8700, this is true. But you would need a complete platform jump which would negate the "savings" by some margin. This is a niche device for those of us who don't see a need to toss a fantastic rig just to have the latest and 10-20% better performing chips available. I intend to hold on to my Q9300@3Ghz till Sandy Bridge or later. And if I happen to come across an E8700 at a bargain price, I might pick it up, because if I can run it at 4.5Ghz with little overvolting or extreme cooling then I might be able to extend the useful life of my rig until the next tock, instead of the next tick.

So all that said, rockit00 and shens, if you're done with them and don't know what to do with them, look my way. As for all the rest, I'll see you when Sandy Bridge comes around.

I meant to say the E8700 will easily do 4200.3MHz on 1.232 V as validated with CPU-z.

expert overclockers with a lucky chip is not "easily"...
If someone tells you a chip "easily overclocks to X" take it with a bucket of salt... it is highly likely that most random chips only overclock half as much.

Also, when someone says "on air" that is not "on stock cooler"... likely they have a beastly pure copper heatsink that is way too big to comfortably fit (I have one, its very nice to use and OC with, but it is a nightmare to install)

overclocking quads above 4 ghz is a chore, but the nicer wolfdales or clarkdales can hit it with any decent 92mm or 120mm heat tower. doesn't have to be like a 12 heatpipe one either.

4.2 ghz isn't super impressive for wolfdale.

Interesting but somewhat useless/overpriced?

Only use would be for someone with an old dually and compatible S775 board. Sidegrading from a q9xxx to this makes no sense to me. Even with 1ghz higher clock speed, the drop of two cores and 6mb l2 is a pretty steep argument. I'd bet that a 3.2ghz q9xxx would still run circles around the 4.5ghz c8xxx in encoding and multitasking, and either is enough to basically max out any game out there.

I learned of the existance of a Q9505 today! The Q9505 is like a Q9550 with half the L2 cache of the Q9550. I bet you didn't know about that one. What can it do? I spent the last two weeks looking for a way to install my E8600 E0 (Q820A 5.0GHz on air chip) on my Abit IP35 Dark Raider motherboard. There is NO way to do it. The E8500 C0 worked like magic, but even the best beta bios won't help the IP35 and E0 8600. I've never owned a Quad but I'd like to race one some day. taltamir, I use a modified Silent Knight II with Zalman mounting and it is truly a nightmare to swap CPU's!!! One geeks junk is another geeks treasure.

I had a X3380 b4.

Basically it was a 9.5x multi quadcore.

But that didnt last long because i got my gainestown a few weeks later.

But ive also had the chance to get a E8700, however dual cores are the thing of a past for me back then.

Now quadcores are getting retired out of my farm soon.

I bet in 50 years the E8700 will be a $1 mil collectors item. And wait, IDC got a new job? I hope he's not too busy to keep us wannabe EE's enlightened :D
