Hmmm, this might be a hot deal... if you have a FSB1333 motherboard that can't take Wolfdales. Actually, it wouldn't be bad for any board that can take Conroe but not Wolfdales, because it should run at slower FSB just fine (underclocked).

This is hot because its a significant price drop, but was previously high (for the most part) due to the lack of e8400 availability. I suspect this has now been dropped to clear 65nm channels with the expectation that e8400's are going to be much easier to come across from now on. I expect this will be roughly a regular price from now on.

Isn't this roughly the same price as the E8400? Explain to me again why you'd want to buy this?

if you have an nforce 680 board , it might be your only option.

Wouldn't the Q6600 be a better buy?

I thought the 680i's were good to go with Wolfdales with a bios update, just not the quad core 45nm's...

I am running an Xeon E3110 Wolfdale at 4.05ghz in my 680i. It does require an bios update.'

I was running an E6850@3.6Ghz before I installed the Xeon.

There is an improvement in everything with the Xeon.

It is also running a lot hotter than my E6850 was.

In head to head comparisons the E8400 out performed the E6850 in every test and even the E8200 beat it in some test.

The temp registers are different on the wolfdale's than the conroe's. All temp programs have a problem reading true temps and do their best to interpret idle temps.

680i is fine with 45nm duals, just the 45nm quads that don't play nice with it.
