Intel Core 2 Duo E6420

Depends on ambient room temps and case airflow, but non-overclocked it should be around the 40's C at idle and 50's loaded up. If you overclock its higher

I clocked my E6400 to 3.3ghz on the stock cooler before I got a better one, and it would hit mid 70's under full orthos load and even hit 80 in TAT. Obviously I didn't leave it that way and backed way down until I got a top notch aftermarket cooler.

So whats the highest it should go when in use that is safe and won't ruin the cpu ? I am not sure what heat compound or whatever you call it for the intel cpu. I guess its what was on it from the retail heatsink ? I know if I take the heatsink off at all I need to reapply need compound right ? Is the compound on the retail heatsink/fan any good or not really?

Mine right now is at 35 to 38 C in idle and not sure what it is loaded up. Haven't really been able to check while playing games. Not sure how you would do this sense its in the BIOS. To bad you can't go from the BIOS to a game with one key on your keyboard!

I'm running around 90F surfing the web and doing documents and spreadsheets. If I do something that takes both cores to 100% usage for any length of time my temps will go up to around 95F. Can you adjust your fan in the bios and if so have you already done it?

I'd say 60 or 70C is pretty hot.

Yes.

No.

Totally fine.

Thanks. So how much room in overclocking it with the retail heatsink/fan you think I have or do you think I should not even try it?

The main thing is I have never overclocked a cpu before, a video card I have but never a cpu. Not exactly sure how it works. I wouldn't go crazy though I would only overclock a little at a time to make sure I don't burn up the cpu. Think I should just not overclock in till I have a need for a faster cpu because of a certain game won't run very well without a faster cpu or because the cpu is the bottleneck now for my Geforce 8800 video card in a certain game?

Down load a windows temp program to show your temps in windows. CoreTemp is one, Speedfan is another, and your motherboard should have come with one also.
