sorry for the newbie question - which one is faster and runs cooler.

I guess my real question is what is the diff - is a 2 duo, a dual core??

point to a url that explains it greatly appreciated if it takes more then 3 sentences to explain.

thanks much

If you're talking about the Intel Dual-Core Pentium 2x00 series vs the Core 2 Duo e4x00 and e6xx0 series, then the main difference as follows:

e2160 - 1MB of L2 Cache, 800 FSB, 9x multiplier, 1.8Ghz no VT support

e4300 - 2MB of L2 Cache, 800 FSB, 9x multiplier, 1.8Ghz no VT support

e6300 - 2MB of L2 Cache, 1066FSB, 7x multiplier, 1.86Ghz supports VT*

e6320 - 4MB of L2 Cache, 1066FSB, 7x multiplier, 1.86Ghz supports VT*

* = Virtualization Technology. It allows for you to run multiple virtual OS. Handy for servers and developers. Barely useful to most end-users.

From what benchmarks I've seen, the lower cache either makes a marginal difference or a substantial difference depending on the game/app you're running. As for FSB, while a higher FSB means better performance, it's a marginal performance gain. If you were to ask me what chip to buy, since the price difference between an e2160 and e4300 is around $20 I would get an e4300. And for $20 more you can get an e4400 and so on. The advantage of the e2x00 and e4x00 series is their higher mulipliers and low FSB. You can get an easy overclock either through a pad mod if you're using a cheap board or simply increasing the FSB to 266, which won't stress your memory.

Pentium Ds are very bad processors. Core 2 Duos are the stars of the current CPU world. A C2D clocked at the same speed as a Pentium D will run circles around the Pentium.

He was talking about Pentium E21X0 Dual-cores, not Pentium D's. The Pentium E21X0's are based off the core architecture, not net-burst.

well the core 2 will be slightly faster since it has more cache, but that may or may not matter much. obviously more cache cant hurt.

I suppose the e6320 being a B2 stepping (I think all of them are) use more electricity at idle than the L2 stepping versions of the e4300 , e2160 and 6300 ... (there are also B2 e6300s though).

I suppose if you leave your machine idle a lot but on, the best choice is the e4300 (it speed steps to 1.2 ghz, so it uses less power than the e6300s which only go down to 1.6) but yeah thats the other minor minor difference.

Core2Duo beats Pentium D, easy!

They're both Dual-Core, but the Core2 is a much newer and much more intelligent design. The C2D's run faster, and cooler, and you can get a Quad-core if you want.
