What is your water cooling setup?
 
I was helping a R6 friend build a Z370 build but he gave up trying to get an 8700k and bought this instead. I am not familiar with them at all..

Just kinda bummed we didn't finish the build. We had a cheaper Z370 board, and slightly better DDR4. But no 8700k. He almost was ready to give up and go to Z270.

I think that pre built is a decent price but jeez it takes the fun out of it. I can see many people buying that just to gut it.

He wants to overclock with it. The 600w bronze power supply makes me nervous.

I am using a Noctua NH-U14S with the new Chromax black fan ( I hate the Noctua tanish/beige color).

EKWB will soon be releasing their new AIO MLC products. Might switch the Noctua out for that eventually.
 
My 8700 + MSI Z370M Pro AC mATX board have arrived and the system is fleshing out.

Some observations from the (very very) limited testing I was able to perform:
  • Configurable TDP works as expected, I changed the power config of the CPU from 65W to 100W+ with just a few clicks.
  • 6C Turbo multiplier cannot be adjusted past the stock limit of 43x, as reported by reviewers and people on our forum as well. Maybe future BIOS updates will help, although I won't hold my breath.
  • Running CineBench 15 at 4.3Ghz with stock voltage results in ~90W package power and a score of 1410 points. (system is only running with 8GB of 2133 RAM in 1 channel config)
  • Temps go up quickly even with a Noctua NH-D14. My setup is silence oriented, but I saw temps going up fast under load and going back down quickly once the CPU returned to idle, so I'm inclined to believe the main limiting factor here is not the cooler, at least not on CB15 "short" term loads.
  • The MSI board is having trouble with running memory @ XMP settings: it's either a specific problem with my RAM (although it works fine on the Z170 system) or a BIOS problem. Not going to linger over it, will have to test with a another (proper) memory kit.
Anyone who wants to make the most of 8700 should seriously consider a beefy cooler and increase cTDP to 95W+. As I expected, there's a lot of performance left on the table when running in stock config and with small coolers.

Thanks for the observations, especially on the thermals - I was looking for confirmation on that front. I think I may get the Be Quiet! Dark Rock TF, which I was initially considering to be overkill, but may be a good choice given you are using NH-D14 and not keeping temps down even with that.

Whats the result if you leave cTDP as is at 65W?

Don't take my temperature observations as the norm, my setup is running very low RPM fans. My only intent was to caution people who intend to use this CPU with small coolers: they won't be able to extract the full potential of the chip. As I was expecting from the 8700K reviews, the 8700 non-K is a 95W+ TDP chip in disguise. (and that's a good thing)

That having been said, your choice of cooler sounds good to me. 🙂

I'll try to do a stock run tonight (both BIOS Auto and 65W TDP manually enforced), will report back.

I know your pain, my order is still showing as back order and wasnt filled last night either. 🙁 You know this very same thing happened to me with the Ryzen launch to but in reverse. I got a CPU but could not get a motherboard but this time I got a motherboard but cant get a darn cpu.

Quick update on this: going back to Auto was buggy, the system simply kept the values I had already set manually. I did however set the TDP to 65W, also disabled the Short Term boost past 65W to simulate continuous load.

With this setting Package power never went above 65W and CB 15 score was 1226. The cores kept jumping between 3200 and 4300Mhz.
 
Wow, all these peeps getting 8700Ks... I dunno, my excitement already peaked over Coffee Lake, though some of that could be that I again, bought the bottom-of-the-stack,the i3-8100. Which IS a solid 4C/4T chip, but next to my Ryzen 5 1600 6C/12T, it's just not all that. It's pretty-much a locked competitor to the Ryzen 3 1200 CPU when OCed.

But it was in-stock. 😛 🙂
 
The 8700k should arrive on Friday! I also decided to purchase a motherboard to properly build out the i3-8100 that I bought. I decided to finally resub to Netflix, and I realized that I lack a 4K-capable player in my bedroom apart from my TV's built-in software. So, all it takes is a 7th-generation processor or above (with the Windows 10 Netflix app or Edge), and I had that in the i3-8100. 😉 Of course, it's kind of awkward when your CPU costs less than your motherboard. 😛 I was tempted to pick up some DDR4-3000 for it given reviews showing benefits of faster memory and its decent price (~$150-160 for 16GB: 2x8GB). However, I'll just steal 16GB from my current desktop. It's DDR4-2666, which isn't the fastest shown in tests, but it seems like Witcher 3 is the only game (that I've seen) that really cares when going higher.

I'm being a bit meticulous when building my 8700k system. The Thermaltake Core X9 is a really big case.... or rather, it's deceptively big compared to what you might expect. Since the case has a window, I'm trying to make sure all of my cables are routed as best as possible, and that takes quite a decent amount of fax extensions... especially since I have fans at the top serving as localized intakes for the video card and CPU. I also picked up a 3-foot SATA cable to handle going to the Blu-ray drive, and now I realized that I never picked up a long extension for the power cable! 😛
 
Wasn't expecting my 8700k to ship for another couple of weeks, and spent the rest of my budget on a monitor and recreational drugs. All I can do is look at the box for the next 10 days. Paid ca $425. Digitec.ch. They probably ship to eu as well.
