Intel Chipset Software 10 doesn't install anything?

When I install Intel Chipset Software 9.4.0.1017 or 9.4.0.1027, I notice that many of the system devices under device manager now have the right name like Intel 8 /C220 Series PCI Express Root Port and if I right click and go to the drive details, I see the version of the Intel Chipset Software I installed.

Now even on a clean Windows install, if I install Intel Chipset Software v10.xx, only one device gets a driver update which is the HM87 LPC Controller, the rest of the components all would have the default Windows driver 6.5 or something like that

I also tried installing it using the -overall command but it didn't make a difference

What gives?

According to the release notes V10 only supports the following
he Intel® Chipset Device Software contains support for the following:
· Intel® Atom™/Celeron®/Pentium® Processor
· Intel® 9 series chipset
· 4th Generation Intel® Core™ processor family
· 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family
· 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family

So if you are using v10 on an older chipset, ie 9 series or older, then it will not do much
and you would have to use the last version of the v9 drivers

Yes, version 9.4 is the latest for the HM87 chipset in your laptop:

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=5M50D

The other drivers don't work because they do not include your chipset. The only thing that surprises me is that Windows let them install at all, but maybe there were some warnings you neglected to mention.

What surprirses me is that on Dell's drivers page for the Alienware 13 which just got released recently, and also uses the HM87 CPU, they list the 10.0.20 version for the Intel Chipset Software, that's what confuses me even more. why would the drivers team even put it if it isn't compatible? I know DELL driver support is lousy but just saying

You may know better than I about that, but I would guess an error on their part. Intel should have the best information on what works best for your chipset.

Interestingly, while looking into this I caught some prices on ebay and other sites for the motherboard in your system. Insane!

Then I'll stick to the latest supported for my system which is 9.4.0.1027

The motherboard on my system? It's a laptop bro, cost me around $6500 USD with the configuration you see.

Yes, we all know you have a laptop. It's just that the board isn't anything fancy. Far as I can see it's a pretty standard HM87 with some BIOS tweaks. What you are paying for is the screen, SSD, RAM, video cards, and the BD-ROM drive.

FWIW I have a Z97 board and a 4790K. Installed chipset driver 10.0.22 and the only driver actually numbered 10.0.22 is the SMBus host controller. The rest of the Intel system devices are like you noted, they are all Microsoft drivers from 6/21/2006. How can a driver dated 6/21/2006 identify a chipset from years later? I don't know what is going on but it works so I am not going to worry about it.

that means it's using the basic Windows Driver. Do as I did and install the latest version supported by your chipset then all the components will be properly identified and installed.

Make sure you use the -overall switch in a command prompt

Driver 9.4.4.1006 doesn't install anything. That is the last driver before the 10.xx drivers. It only contains drivers for chipsets up to 8 series Lynx Point. Z97 was launched Q2'14. Intel website has download for 10.xx driver. The release notes state:

Code:
Intel® Chipset Device Software Support

The Intel® Chipset Device Software contains support for the following:

· Intel® Atom™/Celeron®/Pentium® Processor

· Intel® 9 series chipset

· 4th Generation Intel® Core™ processor family

· 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family

· 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family

When installing the 10.xx driver I checked the temp folder where the drivers are extracted to, and found these inf files.

When I install Windows it is unattended with all drivers included. These inf files will not install because they don't support that method, you must use the installer.

So I install the driver package using setupcomplete.cmd and RunOnceEx. It all works for me and maybe someday I'll figure out why there is 2006 MS driver for a 2014 Intel device.

9.4.4.1006 or 9.4.0.1027 for me install the same driver verrions which are effectively 9.4.0.1023 I guess that's the latest supported for my HM87 chipset so since they make no difference, I stuck to 9.4.0.1027

To ensure proper installation of the Intel Chipset Drivers in case you were not installing them for the first time after a format, do the following:

[FONT=&amp]1) Copy the setup file to the root of C:\ then launch command prompt as admin

2) then type cd\ to go back to the root of C:\

[/FONT]

Now the drivers will be installed completely because if you don't follow this method, then as soon as you run the setup regularly and hit next, you will notice that the installation completed and nothing happened.

NOTE: You MUST re-install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Drivers after you install the Intel Chipset Drivers because the Intel Chipset Drivers usually install their own AHCI Controller so you have to reinstall the IRST Drivers again as they are better.

The Intel Chipset software does not include any drivers. The software just installs "inf" files that Windows uses to install the appropriate drivers. Intel writes that the software is needed only when an Operating system is installed and does not have to be updated. See this Intel web page for an overview that should clear up a lot of misconceptions about its chipset software: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-030865.htm

No. The Intel INF Chipset Installation will not install any AHCI drivers, unless it has been modified and repackaged by an IHV (e.g. ASUS or MSI).
