intel chip question....

i've been outta the loop lately so my question is a little outdated.

what is the difference between the 423 pin and 478 pin pentium 4 chip?

thanks!!

None. However, there will be new P4s using the Socket 478 that use the .13 micron process instead of the .18 These should run cooler.

Well, I thought the move from 423 to 478 pins was supposed to denote the release of Northwood, Intel's 0.13 micron P4 with 512kb cache. However, I've just learned today that there are 478-pin P4's @ 0.18 and 256kb cache.

Read more about the Northwood here.

At any rate, all new P4's will have 478 pins. So if you want upgradability, you'd want to get a 478-pin CPU, so you're not stuck with a 423-pin socket.

so if i were to buy one today, i would want to go with the 478....because when the new chip (.13)comes out i can use the same mobo???
