Whoop-dee-doo. So laptop dealers will show a new product name and still show the actual clock speed and perhaps bus speed. Online retailers (and some b&m) will still show full details of clock speed, bus speed, voltage, cache and maybe now add the TDP rating. As with the old system, nobody will actually pay attention to the model names in order to make a choice in which processor to get. The highest TDP mobile chip will continue to be used in the majority of systems, and the lower rated chips will be used in specialty products which one expects to have much lower voltage and wattage, just like now, and it still won't matter what the name of the chip is.

Nice... Now the end-buyer is super screwed.

No wonder people ask about Mhz, the idiotic codes are 100% more confusing. The Intel naming convention reminds me of "package" codes at GM or Chrysler. You don't get the simple "sport" package, you get the 4AHG with optional ATG... or some other nonsense.

With less and less similarity between processor performance and naming it's no wonder the general public get confused. I know full well that when I buy a CPU it is based on an informed decision, not my number is bigger with more letters than yours.

Here's my alternate naming system, well the thermal output bit anyway.

T-Toaster
LB-Lap Burner
PoF-Pants on Fire
AsB-Anyone smell BBQ

We should probably get some governing body to mediate this.

Let them sort out some real benchmark or benchmark suite to test CPU's on, give them all certified rating and force AMD and Intel to use it.

That way, the public would get a reasonable, presumably unbiased rating for their processors. Probably an over the top solution but is there really a better way to do this?
