Intel Celeron: 100MHz FSB on 28 January

Well, the first Intel Celeron processor with a new 100MHz FSB has been finally defined. According to our reliable source, this event is scheduled for 28 January 2001 and will take place together with the price drop we have already told you about today. This day will be the birthday of a new 800MHz Celeron, which will sell for about $170 in 1000-unit quantities. No wonder, since it will be the fastest Celeron CPU in this processor family.

finally
about time intel 🙂

What's really stupid about that pricing is you may as well buy a PIII, then overclock that. 🙂

About bloody time....but I agree that you might as well buy a full fledged P3.

what's even stupider is they are probably just rebadged 533's that they had in a basement somewhere... haha. 🙂

Yeah, I got a C825 (896 with active cooling) last April for $115 (?) in a quantity of one. Intel will have to do better than that if they want me to upgrade. I need at least to double performance for the same price again, though they do have a few months more to deliver on that before I can really feel justified in mocking them.

Well since this will not do dual cpu, then it's no bargain. In fact PIII's will be much better. The 800 PIII should be about $200 each (maybe even less) by then.

Duron is the way to go, baby! While its nice to see them finally do it, the $$$ is ridiculous. I have a Plll700 in this thing, but if I was building a new desktop, it would be a 8-900mhz Duron and overclock that bit@h somethin' fierce....
Oh, and they are coming out with mobile Durons too...

KDOG and ahfung said it best. Too little too late and AMD is the way to go. For $170 in January, you can get a Duron 700 AND a mobo, run that w/o o/cing and it will still spank a 800 celery.

There is no Multi-processor chipset for AMD's at this time. There will be sometime in the no so distant future (I heard summer) in the form of the 760MP.

If it was $100 then it would be a good deal..If you have a BX motherboard....$170...get outta here...I can get a Duron and motherboard for a few $$$'s more...lol

The Celeron should still be good for those who don't know much about their own hardware, or who might but don't care to constantly update and read about patches, revisions, and troubleshooting. I know I couldn't recommend any AMD chips to my old high school friends because, even though they've been using computers almost as long as I have, they never bothered to learn about maintaining and updating their own computers. Celerons in Intel-chipset motherboards is probably the easiest and cheapest setup someone, like these friends, could get. I'm pretty sick of spending 1-2 hours at a time on the phone with a friend or cousin just telling him how to update his video card drivers. Imagine if I had to look up all the info about his Via/AMD/non-Intel motherboard for him and tell him what updates he needs, what order he should install them, and why it didn't work as it should.

Intel will be fine... the celeron will still has plenty of performance for the market segment it is designed for. They will be fine, i think if you really think about it intel has a great plan. Think logically now. AMD still has to continue executing perfectly every quarter to even stay with them, if you really look at charts and stuff, AMD still only has like 15% market share. They have basically taken all of what cyrix and winchip had, Intel is barely hurting, exactly how many DURON systems do you see at best buy, or on the desks of a fortune 500 company.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Cel2-600 for $79. It is the new cC0 stepping at 1.7v default. I stuck it in a BE6-2 and it runs fine at 100 MHz FSB with no voltage tweaks! So, it is a Cel2-900, and now they want to sell me an 800 for $90 more. The only thing I would get is a lower multiplier! 🙂😀

I am very please with my new chip and am looking for 2 more to replace 300a's. This thing will churn out a "Normal" Seti WU in 5 hours. Since I already have the mobo to support it, it is the best buy for my money!

unfortunately, the duron is still better...

running my 533 @ 800 now... probably the better solution than some of those 100 MHz celerons ;-)
