Intel branding works too well

It really gets on my nerves when someone puts a laptop up for sale, or in their sig and says that they have a Centrino processor.

THERE IS NO THING AS A CENTRINO PROCESSOR.

Centrino is Intels brand of mobile solutions. A laptop is allowed to be called a Centrino laptop only when it has a combination of an intel mobile processor, an intel chipset and an intel wireless solution.

The technicality: Centrino only accepts certain kinds of processors, mine is one of those, so it's a centrino processor.

Yes and no. You have a Pentium Mobile, or a Celeron Mobile, or a Core Duo or a Core 2 Duo, you do not have a "Centrino" processor. It can be classified as such, but you can and should be more speicific about it.

I do not have a 1.73ghz Centrino processor. I have a 1.73ghz Pentium M. Please people, make the distinction. Especially if you're trying to show it off or sell it.

i think intel likes that confusion. its far better than people with pentium-m thinking they have pentium4m, or not realizing that the two are different.

It just bugs the heck out of me when people try to tout themselves as being tech savvy when they don't even know what the heck they have. And being an informed buyer and not being able to get the right info from the seller because they don't know what they have.

I was looking at Core 2 Duo laptops on ebay.. several sellers are calling them "Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo" processors.

Oh, and some of them came with "Windows Office 2003"

i dont like the way intel called the dual core pentium M's Core Duo's since technically dothan isnt part of the new "core" architecture and yonah is just two dothans stapled together.

yeah core 2 is derived from those chips, but the "core" branding was more a way for intel to step away from the netburst architecture behind the P4, and bring something new to the the table seeing as raw clock speed wasnt panning out.

dothan/yonah kinda existed before the core branding and so shouldnt really be labled as such.

Funny you should mention that. I actually don't even drink soda anymore, let alone coffee. If I have a cup of coffee I'm sooooo wired it's not even funny, and makes me feel like crap. Half the time I'll get the shakes.

I dunno. I forsee the same issue with the Turion brand down the line. Although they're a bit better about it, I don't want to have to memorize a bunch of 2 letter 2 number combo's that go with a clock speed cache size and core count.

No, it isn't. Yonah is a different core that combines a lot of the traits of Dothan, but is NOT just two Dothan's stapled together. Really Yonah was Intel's first decent dual core chip that WASN'T stapled together and Core 2 (Merom/Conroe) is an evolution of Core 1 (Yonah). That's the facts Jack

I do this sometimes, especially when giving advice on what to buy (I'm an IT person, not a sales person). It's far easier for me to tell them to go look for Centrino than for Pentium-M because invariably they'll end up with a Pentium 4M and not be happy with it. I do place a lot of the blame on Intel for not making a bigger distinction between mobile Pentium 4s and the true mobile processors.

Long story short, you need to chill out.
